Aquaria – In addition to the New England Aquarium (see below), students have obtained internships at Monterrey Bay Aquarium and Mystic Aquarium. Check the websites of aquaria near where you live.
Carrie Institute for Ecosystems Studies in Millbrook, NY. REU Program.
Cobscook Bay Resource Center, Easport, ME – see Prof. Shumway to explore internship possibilities mapping anadromous fish habitat, studying the scallop fishery, and GIS mapping.
Damariscotta River Association Stewardship Internship – Ecolog-L Listserve – This is the listserve of the Ecological Society of America. It’s a good place to look for ads for summer jobs and graduate programs. The best summer internships are NSF-sponsored “Research Experiences for Undergraduates” (REU) – they are also the most competitive. I recommend visiting the listserv archives and scanning the subject lines for job ads. Check back weekly, especially from Jan-Mar when the greatest number of ads are posted.
Environmental Protection Agency – Regional offices, such the one on Narragansett Bay, have research labs that provide internships.
Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology – Great experience. Highly competitive. Usually has an early February deadline.
International Fund for Animal Welfare, Cape Cod – Marine Mammal and Rescue Research Team, contact C.T. Harry.
IslandWood – Environmental education on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole – Usually have a summer intern program, either in research or animal care.
Massachusetts Audubon Society – individual sanctuaries hire students as research interns. MAS also hires students as shorebird monitors.
Mount Desert Island Biological Lab – has a summer research fellowship program.
National Park Service – many national parks offer internships. Search the park websites.
National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) – grants are awarded to primary investigators, usually at research universities, who then hire undergraduates as summer research assistants. One of the best and most competitive summer internship opportunities for science students. Dec / Jan deadlines.
New England Aquarium – Very early deadline, so don’t miss it. If you apply to work with marine mammals, you will be one of thousands of applicants with the same interest. Increase the odds by indicating interests in other areas as well.
Norman Bird Sanctuary – Middletown, RI.
Norton Conservation Commission – contact the town Conservation Agent to see if any internships are available. Within walking distance of Wheaton.
OARS – for the Assabet, Sudbury, and Concord Rivers (MA) – local conservation organization offering internships in environmental education and invasive species control.
Oncourse site for Biological Sciences Majors – long list of summer courses, internship opportunities, and graduate programs. Look in the Organizations section of onCourse.
Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica – Summer REU program. They also have programs specifically for students from Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The Raptor Trust – Millington, NJ – One of the premier, privately funded avian rehabilitation centers in the United States. Offer seasonal internships lasting 12-14 wks. Internship may be tailored to the specific requirements of candidate’s college. Of particular interest to students pursuing the following majors: Pre-vet, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Animal Behavior, and Biology. Stipend available for qualified candidates.
Save the Bay – Narragansett Bay, RI
United States National Arboretum – Work experience and training in horticulture, botany, research, education, facilities management, and public garden administration. Selected individuals gain hands-on experience throughout the Arboretum’s various plant collections, greenhouses, and research laboratories.
Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve – Many of our National Estuarine Reserves offer research internships.
Wheaton Career Services / Filene Center – maintains a database of internships and funding opportunities.
Wheaton Professors! Many professors conduct research in the lab and field over the summer, providing excellent internship opportunities for Wheaton students. Talk to your professors. This is a great way for Merit Scholars to use their stipend funds.
Zoos – many zoos offer summer research internships with an environmental focus. Wheaton students have conducted internships at Roger Williams, Southwick’s, Atlanta, and Oregon Zoos.
