Students with disabilities experience a change in rights and responsibilities when they transition from high school to college. Unlike high school, college students must self-disclose their disability and self-initiate each step in the process of accommodation. This is a significant and important distinction in the accommodation process at the post-secondary level.
Wheaton College can only provide an accommodation based on a student’s documented needs if a student has requested it and completed each step in the process. Students are often reluctant to disclose information about their disability for fear of being stigmatized or denied opportunities; however, the reality is that many students utilize accommodations and other supports at Wheaton College and doing so facilitates their academic success.
