The Wheaton Chorale and Chamber Singers are joined by Donnell L. Patterson, one of Boston’s leading gospel choir directors, known for his great musicality and infectious enthusiasm. In addition to singing gospel music and spirituals with our visiting artist, the choirs will sing selections from African American composers including William Grant Still and Rosephanye Powell. Earl Raney, associate professor of music, leads the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Symphony in its spring performance featuring works by Holst, Grainger, Bizet, Anderson, Sousa, and Williams. Suggested donation $5.

Comprised of two-time Grammy-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and virtuoso marimba player Mika Stoltzman, Duo Cantando joins the GWSO in a concert of jazz-inspired music by American composers. Featuring compositions by Leonard Bernstein, Chick Corea, James P. Johnson, and Florence Price. The GWSO will also premiere a new piece by Wheaton senior Hannah Merseal. Suggested donation $5.

Abena Koomson-Davis, Musical Director of the Resistance Revival Chorus, will bring the most beloved works of African American poetry into song with Wheaton’s own Voices United to Jam and other students for the whole community.  Discussion with Provost Renée T. White, Ms. Koomson-Davis, Olivia Bennisan ’19 (SGA President) and Candice Appiah ’21 (ICB Chair) to follow the performance.  All are invited to a special dinner in the Chapel Basement afterwards.

Haas Visiting Artist Reverend Billy and his collaborator Savitri D. return to Wheaton for a performance hosted by the Wheaton Institute for the Interdisciplinary Humanities. Come and see this performance artist-preacher revel against the sins of consumerism and sermonize on the crisis of the Earth. Internationally notorious for their hilarious and controversial work, director/activist Savitri D. and Reverend Billy’s stop at Wheaton promises to shake Cole Memorial Chapel with a joyful noise. Join us after the performance for a conversation led by Savitri D. about creative activism and strategies of resistance.

Being a fan usually starts with loving a given series, franchise, author, band, game, etc., but it rarely ends there. For many, fandom provides a sense of community, a catalyst for producing original creative content, or both. Flourish Klink and Elizabeth Minkel, creators and hosts of Fansplaining, will discuss their adventures in podcasting and fan culture, and how, perhaps even with a little help from the two of them, fans and the creative industries may have learned to stop worrying and love each other.

Actor-director André Nerman brings the memoir of the author of The Little Prince to life on the Weber stage. Two men in a small plane, surrounded by a sea of clouds, begin to talk. They know that, from a higher perspective, the walls between peoples and cultures disappear… Please note: This program will be presented in French. Dance Fest 2019 is a celebration of the 10 year anniversary for student-led dance groups Tap Out Loud (TOL) and Paraíso Latino (PL). Performing pieces choreographed by current members, TOL and PL are excited to bring their respective styles of tap and Latin dance to the stage, with a bit of extra sparkle thrown in.
