What is File Services on NetSpace?

File services on NetSpace is a generic term used to describe a location out on the network where you can do the following:

  • Backup important folders and documents from your computer
  • Share files with others in your group

For individual users here is what the disk space quotas will be

  • Faculty/Staff 10 GB per person
  • Students 5.0 GB per person
  • Affiliates 100 MB per person

How do I connect to File Services on Netspace?

See Connecting to File Services on NetSpace.

What content is appropriate for uploading to File Services on NetSpace?

If you have a lot of data that you want to archive for a long period of time (ex: old email messages) then you are probably better off burning this data to a DVD or CDROM. Please do not try and backup your entire hard drive to this space, a better candidate would be your My Documents folder.

What will File Services on Netspace look like?

When you connect to the server you will see the following 4 folders.

  • Affiliates
  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Students

Your personal folder will be underneath one of the folders listed above and your folder will be named in the format lastname_firstname. For example, I am a staff member so I would go inside the Staff folder then enter my personal folder gibson_brian.

There will be 3 top level folders inside your personal folder:

  • public
  • private
  • dropbin

The public folder is where you can upload files/folders that other Wheaton users can see and download but cannot modify or delete.

The private folder is where you can upload files/folders that only you can access. (This is a good place to save personal data).

The dropbin folder is where other Wheaton users can securely upload content for you but only you can see and access this data. We strongly suggest that you zip up any files/folders you want to transfer into one large file before copying it to another person’s dropbin. This will make it a little easier to tell if the data transfer was successful. After you have uploaded your zip file please contact the dropbin folder owner to let them know they have new content waiting for them.
