An important step in planning your study abroad experience is considering the financial implications of your particular program.

Billing Structure
Students studying abroad will pay Wheaton tuition only, to Wheaton, and housing and meals directly to their study abroad program. Students are encouraged to do their research as housing and meal costs vary greatly from program to program. For many programs there is no meal plan and students will be shopping and cooking for themselves. Wheaton will, in turn, pay the program for all tuition and academic fees, and international health insurance. There will be no study abroad fee. Students will book and pay for their own flights.
Federal, state, Wheaton need-based and merit scholarships will be applied to these charges for Wheaton-approved programs. Students must consult with the Office of Student Financial Services for a comprehensive review of these fees.
Wheaton Faculty-Led Short-Term Study Abroad
Wheaton Faculty-Led Short-Term Programs in January and summer are an additional cost to participants. Prices vary according to destination, duration and included costs. Program fees will be applied to the Wheaton College student bill during regular billing cycles.
Students participating in faculty-led programs in January and summer may be eligible for need-based financial aid, after review of budgets and availability by Student Financial Services.
Non-Wheaton Summer or Short-Term Study Abroad
Students studying abroad during the semester breaks on programs that are not Wheaton Faculty-Led will pay the study abroad program directly for all costs (tuition, room, board, fees etc). Students participating in these programs (January or Summer) will be charged a $250.00 administrative fee. This fee will be applied to the Wheaton College student bill during regular billing cycles.
Currently, financial aid does not cover any non-Wheaton summer study abroad programs. Students should investigate funding options through their study abroad program.

Other Expenses
Students studying abroad are also responsible for passport and visa fees, study abroad insurance (if applicable), local transportation, and personal travel and other expenses.
Required Supplemental Study Abroad Insurance
All students participating on study abroad programs are required to have appropriate overseas health coverage. Several programs provide their own coverage, at no additional expense to the student. Students enrolled in the Wheaton College health insurance plan do not need supplemental study abroad insurance because their coverage will travel with them. For all other students, supplemental study abroad insurance coverage through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) is provided by the Center for Global Education in addition to primary health coverage through a parent and/or guardian. Students will be automatically enrolled for the specific dates of the program. Should a student be overseas beyond the program dates, they will be billed for any additional cost, to their Wheaton student account. The cost of the CISI insurance is currently $41 per month.
Payment Options
Students will receive a Wheaton bill in either July (fall semester) or December (spring semester) for participation in a study abroad program. Students should make sure all bills are paid in full prior to departure. Students with remaining balances will be unable to register for courses or obtain official transcripts.
Payment Plans
Students utilizing one of the payment plan options will be able to continue the plan for the year or semester on a study abroad program. It is important to check to make sure the monthly payment amounts will continue to add up to the total costs of the academic year or semester abroad. Further information about payment plans can be found on the Billing and Payment Policy Information page.
Tuition Remission
Matriculating Wheaton students participating in a tuition remission program will be able to utilize their funding to study abroad upon completion of one full semester.
