Christian Lane is the winner of the 2011 Canadian International Organ Competition and director of the Boston Organ Studio. He is one of America’s most accomplished, respected, and versatile concert organists and pedagogues. Lane performs regularly throughout the United States and Europe, notable venues include St. Patrick’s Cathedral (New York), both St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, and Washington National Cathedral. Internationally renowned Irish singer Karan Casey is celebrated for her beautiful traditional vocals and innovative explorations of diverse musical idioms. Known for her early work with the band Solas and a career spanning many years and multiple recordings, she weaves advocacy for social justice and responsibility into her compelling music. Casey is joined by friends including Sheila Falls, Matt Heaton and the Wheaton Chorale for this performance.
Marking the start of the new academic year, the theme for Opening Convocation 2019 is “Never Stop Making History.” Professor Alex Bloom will deliver the convocation address, entitled “Big Little Histories: Postcards From Modern America.”
An all-campus barbecue will be held following the convocation in Emerson Dining Hall.

The Wheaton Chorale and Chamber Singers are joined by Donnell L. Patterson, one of Boston’s leading gospel choir directors, known for his great musicality and infectious enthusiasm. In addition to singing gospel music and spirituals with our visiting artist, the choirs will sing selections from African American composers including William Grant Still and Rosephanye Powell. Suggested donation $10.
This performance by Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble Skylark, explores music inspired by art, and art inspired by music, including a newly commissioned work by Nell Shaw Cohen. The Wheaton Chorale and Chamber Singers will open the program and will join Skylark for a few selections. There will be a pre-concert talk by Skylark Artistic Director Matthew Guard beginning at 2:00 p.m.
College Organist Bill MacPherson celebrates the composer’s 334th birthday with music by both Bach and Dieterich Buxtehude, on Wheaton’s Casavant organ.
William Hite is well known for his interpretation of Schubert’s magnificent song cycle Winterreise. Written in 1827, the year before Schubert’s death, this work is regarded as one of the most important vocal pieces of the Romantic Era. Hite’s visiting artist residence provides a special opportunity to hear the entire work in the remarkable Cole Memorial Chapel, a beautiful acoustic space that creates a connection between performer and audience.
