Students enrolled in MUSC311: Western Music II are joined by Professor of Music Ann Sears for a performance of selected works from their coursework this semester.
Please join the Wheaton Chorale and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Tim Harbold, for an eclectic program of jazz, folk songs, spirituals and pop, featuring songs we explored with Visiting Artists Donnell Patterson (gospel), Dominique Eade (jazz), and Alex Grover (pop).
andPlay (Maya Bennardo and Hannah Levinson) will perform very recent compositions by a diverse roster of composers (David Bird, Carolyn Chen, Anthony Green, and Catherine Lamb).

Muhammad Muwakil and Lou Lyons, along with DJ Rawkus, redefine Calypso and Soca genres to create soulful, compelling, irresistibly infectious music, designed to lift people up and amplify issues of empowerment and Social Justice. Balla Kouyaté is a Master Balafon player, hereditary musician and Griot (‘Djeli’) from Mali, and an international Malian cultural ambassador. He is the recipient of multiple accolades including the NEA’s National Heritage Fellow in 2019. Balla will be joined by his band, World Vision, for a virtuosic concert of Malian traditional music and contemporary music fusions.

Wheaton’s music department is delighted to welcome scholar and journalist William Robin (UMD College Park). His talk is titled ““Minimalism Is History Now”: Bang on a Can and Minimalism in the Late Twentieth Century”. Professor Robin is a regular contributor to the New York Times, and his most recent book Industry is now available from Oxford University Press. Robin’s research explores how institutions structure the creation, dissemination, and reception of contemporary classical music in the United States. His research interests also include early American hymnody, Stravinsky, and the European postwar avant-garde.

The band, under the direction of Assistant Professor Jeffrey Cashen perform music written by Miles Davis, Cedar Walton and Rita Payes, and arranged for the band Cashen. Bethany Tetreault ’23 will premiere a new arrangement for voice. Special guests The Phat Police will open with selections chosen and arranged by the ensemble.
