Fragile VesselsContemporary Ceramics and the Body

Please join us for our opening reception. Works by artists Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Miguel Enrique Lastra, Rob Raphael, Maedah Tafvizi Zavareh, and objects selected by the artists’ from the Wheaton College Permanent Collection are featured.

We have boxes of brightly colored pencils, marking pens, hex codes, and seasonal fashions.  All of these give us access to color. But could it be that we are not seeing the whole picture in the color choices that are offered to us? The way many of us identify individual colors actually closes us off from the protean nature of color and from our abilities to interact with our color vision.  Color is not a thing; it is a relationship between. In this talk, artist Rosy Lamb shares her research into color as a responsive language we all can learn to speak by listening, and by attending to what our eyes see all around us.  Her reserach includes a prototype of a digital tool she is developing, which allows users to intuitively build relational colors using a similar methodology to pigment mixing.

In the Weeds: Art and the Natural World showcases six artists who are examining the complicated relationship between humans and the environment. Many of these artists bridge art and science to bring to life processes that may otherwise elude the general public. Through seed collecting, camouflage, performance, video, and artists’ books, artists Kwang Choi, Rachel Frank, Jenny Kendler, Next Epoch Seed Library (a collaboration between Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco), and Tammy Nguyen consider issues of rewilding and human influence on the natural world.

The exhibition runs October 23—December 12, 2019

The 2021 Wheaton Biennial is an open-call exhibition focused on new media and juried by author and curator, Legacy Russell. Presented virtually, this exhibition includes artists whose work challenges and celebrates new media. As with past Biennials, our definition is boundary-pushing and inclusive, seeking a diverse range of experimental work. View the exhibition at the Beard and Weil Galleries website.

In keeping with the new media focus of this exhibition, please join us for the opening reception in Mozilla Hubs. After choosing an avatar, you will be able to move around the space, view the artwork, and talk with other visitors. Instructions for interacting in Hubs will be at the entrance to the virtual gallery.
