Sitting Through (Art) History

January 30, 2018 @ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This embodiment-oriented class will introduce how the evolution of chair design has influenced anatomical posture of Westernized cultures—a posture necessarily adopted by classroom and writing-based scholars. Visiting Artist Jessie Dwiggins will review the physical structures that adapt to sitting and potentially create bodily discomfort. This will be followed by a movement practice to restore musculature that has unfavorably adapted to sitting, and instill a visceral sense of how to support ourselves while engaging in academic work. Participants art asked to wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga, exercise mat or towel. BASE Meeting Room, Cole Memorial Chapel, 6:00 p.m
