Week 1
Students arrived in Kunming—the capital and largest city in Yunnan Province, China; received an introduction to Chinese language and calligraphy by Professor Sun Jing of the Yunnan Nationalities University Foreign Language Department; watched a taiji and martial arts demonstration; visited the Yunnan Provincial Museum where they received a private showing of paintings and calligraphy by Xu Beihong, one of the three most famous Chinese painting masters of the 20th century; and took a trip to the Stone Forest of Shilin.
Week 2
The group traveled to Lexiaguo in northeast Kunming, which features rich red soil and multi-colored crop plantings; explored the Western Hills and visited a Buddhist temple and Taoist shrine; and participated in a demonstration of facial painting and costumes at the Beijing Opera.
Week 3
During their last full week in China, the students were given a demonstration in traditional Chinese painting; were introduced to Bai architecture in the ancient town of Dali; visited the 2,000-year-old Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple; and learned about a rehabilitation project going on in the historic market town of Shaxi.
