What will the first image of a black hole look like?

April 10, 2019 @ 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Free

As many of you know, the Event Horizon Telescope project and the National Science Foundation will hold a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday April 10th, “to announce a groundbreaking result”.

Rumor has it that they will release an image whose resolution is comparable to that of the angular size of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy (about 25,000 light years away from us!) or the supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy called M87 (about 50 million light years away!). What will the image look like? Will it show stuff falling into the black hole, or would it show how jets (stuff[?] moving away from the black hole at speeds close to the speed of light) are launched near a black hole?

While the press conference itself will be held at the National Press Club in D.C., the event will also be streamed live online. Join us (all interested folks at Wheaton) to watch the live stream of this press conference.

When: Wednesday April 10th. From 9am EDT.

Where: Science Center room 1343 (Intro Physics Classroom)

Hope to see you there!
