A Watchman’s Web: Using Archives to Visualize 19th-Century Providence—12th Annual Mary L. Heuser Lecture featuring Dr. C. Morgan Grefe

A young watchman at Providence’s Prison made a resolution to keep a daily diary in 1867. He recorded his work with the men and women incarcerated there; but, unlike today, the watchmen lived in the prison as well. What can we learn about Rhode Island history from his words? Dr. Grefe will explore the ways records and documents can illuminate how working-class Providence looked and felt in the 19th century.

Anna Webber Simple Trio

New York-based composer, saxophonist, and flutist Anna Webber has been working with her Simple Trio since 2013. The trio features bandmates John Hollenbeck on drums and Matt Mitchell on piano. The Simple Trio’s music highlights what the New York Times called the “range of the group members: fulminous, intense collective improvisation” in songs that feel like living things and lead the audience in different directions on each listen.

Great Woods Symphony Orchestra presents Themes and Variations

The 65-piece GWSO performs a concert exploring how composers have created unique symphonic works inspired by the melodies of others. It includes Aaron Copland’s famous suite from Appalachian Spring, plus music by Ives and Tchaikovsky, as well as the Massachusetts premiere of African-American composer Margaret Bonds’ stirring Montgomery Variations from 1964. Wheaton senior Brianna Sheldon, winner of the Concerto-Aria Competition, joins the orchestra to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1. Suggested donation $5.
