Funding Support through the Center for Global Education & Financial Aid Office

The following forms of financial support are provided via the Center for Global Education:

  1. Student Visa Support Award – award amounts vary depending on visa costs, up to $200
  2. Study Abroad Flight Stipend – award amounts vary depending on flight costs, up to $1,000

Students going on any study abroad program, where the cost of attendance exceeds the cost of attendance on campus, are eligible to apply. Students will be notified of eligibility and sent a google form application to complete after the study abroad application deadline( October 1 or March 1).

There are countless other scholarships available to help alleviate the financial constraints of studying abroad.

External Scholarships

There are numerous fantastic external scholarships available to study abroad students:

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding.
Upcoming Deadlines: early March – for summer, fall semester or academic year abroad; early October  – for spring semester abroad

Award Amounts: Up to $5,000 *Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship are then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement. Critical need languages include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Swahili, and more.

Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Applications are available at
Deadlines: Early February following Academic Year
Award Amounts: up to $10,000 for a semester and $20,000 for a full academic year

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships (FEA)

The FEA has general and dedicated scholarships open to US citizens or permanent residents who study abroad for a minimum of four weeks. More info can be found at: fundforeducationabroad.org
Deadline: Early January – for fall semester abroad; early September – for spring semester abroad
Award amounts: Up to $10,000

FEA Dedicated Scholarships

Through the FEA scholarship application, students are automatically considered for a variety of dedicated Access Partner scholarships, including:

  • BASAA Scholarship (for students who attend college in New England)

  • IFSA Butler Access Partner Scholarship

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship

Freeman-ASIA provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others.
Deadline: Every April – for the following Academic Year
Award amounts: Up to $5,000

Explore the World Travel Scholarship

This scholarship is for aspiring global travelers who want to give back while they experience another culture. Recipients must be participating in a program with an educational or service component.

Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident with demonstrated financial need.
Deadline: Early March for the following Academic Year
Award amounts: $2,000 (two installments of $1,000)

Wheaton Merit Scholarships

Students on a Wheaton study abroad program can apply their merit scholarships to their approved Wheaton study abroad program.

Students participating on a Non-Wheaton Approved Study Abroad Program are unable to apply their merit scholarships. Students should meet with Student Financial Services to discuss alternate funding options.
