Wheaton is a residential college that expects all full-time students to live on campus. As such, students who desire to live outside of college housing must be granted approval.
Please follow the process below if you are choosing to live off-campus.
Students living off campus are classified into two groups:
- Commuting from a parent/guardian’s permanent residence
- Living Off Campus in a residence that they own, rent, or lease.
Requests must be made by published deadlines prior to room selection or (in the case of New Students) before housing assignments have been sent. Late requests or requests during an Academic Year will not be considered unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
When applicable, a student will maintain their Commuter or Off-Campus status from year to year. Application is not required each year.
Commuter or Off Campus Students wishing to move into the Residence Halls, should email Lyndsey Aguilar at [email protected] for information.
Commuting From Home
Requests to live at your parent or guardian’s primary residence and commute to campus must be made in writing. Those requests can be requested via the status change form, located on the main page of the housing portal. Information needed for the form includes:
- Your Wheaton ID
- The address in which you will be commuting from
- The relationship you have with the people residing at that address
- The reason for your desire to commute
These requests are reviewed by the Associate Director of Residential Life and the Dean of Students.
Returning students must request prior to selecting a room for the upcoming Academic Year. New Students* should request prior by June 15th for Fall enrollment and January 1st for Spring enrollment.
*Accepted student requests cannot be processed until they have officially enrolled. If you have questions regarding approval prior to your enrollment decision, please email Residential Life at [email protected].
Living Off Campus
Requests to live in a house, apartment, etc. that is not a parent or guardian’s primary residence would be classified as “Living Off Campus.” Typically, students who live off campus will lease a local apartment with a group of friends. These leases are independent agreements between the students (tenants) and a landlord. The residences have no connection to Wheaton College.
