    Mrs. Wheaton gave the original lead statue and fountain of Hebe, the "cupbearer to the gods," to the Seminary for its fiftieth anniversary in 1884. In the fall of 1932 Hebe was moved to the courtyard created by the new Kilham and Metcalf dormitories. The current bronze statue was dedicated in 1982. More »

    Constructed with funds raised by alumnae and students beginning in 1928, the Student Alumnae Building (SAB) constructed in 1940, was the first building in the Modern, or International, style at Wheaton. The architects were Caleb Hornbostel and Richard M. Bennett, winners of the 1938 Fine Arts Center Competition. A Sesquicentennial project to update and expand this building resulted in the current design. The 1986 Balfour-Hood project, which fully absorbed SAB while leaving its form essentially intact, presents an unusual example of International Style preservation. More »

    In 1975, Wheaton named its first woman president, Alice Frey Emerson, former Dean of Students at the University of Pennsylvania, who served until 1991, completing the Sesquicentennial Campaign (1983-1986), major building renovations and the construction of the new athletic center. She led the college's move to coeducation, from the Trustees vote "in principle" in January 1987, through the arrival of Wheaton's first coed class in September 1988, and into the transition. More »
