1846-1965 Holmes Cottage
February 15, 2011Laban Morey Wheaton built this home for his mother, Fanny Morey Wheaton, after the death of his father in 1846. Originally built on the southeast corner of Howard and Main Streets, it was moved across the street in 1856 when additions were planned for Old Metcalf Hall. The house was sold to Edwin Freeman in 1865, but in 1897 it came into the possession of the Seminary. Holmes Cottage was named for Rev. Franklin Holmes and his wife Mrs. Martha Sawyer Holmes. Martha Sawyer, an 1839 graduate and the principal of the Seminary from 1842 to 1846, married Rev. Franklin Holmes, Wheaton trustee from 1853 to 1859, and they lived in the house that bears their name. More » -
1902-1960 Carter Cottage/ Dr. Mack's House
February 11, 2011Originally located on East Main Street east of Seminary Hall (Mary Lyon Hall), this house was owned by Mrs. Wheaton who sold it to Mr. Gibbs ca. 1851. Wheaton Seminary acquired it in 1902 as part of the Boynton Estate. The house was occupied for many years by Dr. Walter McIntire, Professor of Philosophy from 1914 to 1941. From 1941 until 1960, the house was occupied by Professor of Philosophy Holcombe Austin and his family.Carter Cottage was sold and moved to its present location at 78 Taunton Ave. in 1960 to make way for Watson Fine Arts Center. 1918 Catherine Filene Shouse
March 28, 2011Catherine Filene Shouse was a member of the class of 1918. Daughter of Lincoln and Theresa Filene, Catherine organized the first Intercollegiate Vocational Conference for Women at Wheaton in 1917, while still a junior. Vocational conferences were held at Wheaton annually until the 1950s. Based on this experience, Filene founded Wheaton's first Vocational Bureau, which assisted alumnae in locating employment. 1927-1963 33 Taunton Ave./ Hodges House/ Wetherell House
February 7, 2011The College purchased this house from Thomas and Jessie T. Wetherell in 1927 for a faculty residence. After it was renovated, it was used for housing male workers, so it was sometimes called the "YMCA." It was demolished in 1963. More » -

February 7, 2011The barn in back of Oceans View (14 Taunton Avenue) was renovated into a practice, or "little," theatre in 1935. Little Theatre was demolished in 1962 when Watson Fine Arts Center was built. More » -
1944-1961 Alexander H. Meneely
January 13, 2011Dartmouth College Professor of History Alexander Howard Meneely (1899-1961) began his 17-year tenure when Dr. Park retired in 1944, faced with leading the College in a period of post-war confusion and rising costs. Enrollment growth allowed Wheaton to expand and improve its curriculum, faculty, and building program. The construction of "new campus" began in 1957. More » -

February 2, 2011This residence hall was built and dedicated in 1960 to honor Kate Upson Clark, class of 1869. Clark was an active and influential member of Alumnae Association for over 50 years. She was the founder of the New York Wheaton Club in 1885, Wheaton's first regional alumnae club; a Trustee from 1906-1935; and the recipient of Wheaton's first honorary degree in 1919 on the 50th anniversary of her graduation. 1965- Clark Recreation Center
January 31, 2011Clark Recreation Center was built in 1965 to replace the 1903 Gymnasium. The Haas Athletic Center replaced it in 1991. Clark Recreation Center included offices, dressing rooms, storage space and a gymnasium. The teakwood-vaulted ceiling enclosed two basketball, six badminton, two volleyball and two tennis courts. The floor could be divided in two by a large net that dropped between the basketball and volleyball courts. More » -
