1908- Barrows Green
February 15, 2011The green between Chapin, Larcom, and Emerson Dining Hall, created in 1908, was for many years the site for outdoor basketball games. Games at the time, played with a peach basket mounted on a pole (no backboard), resulted in scores of 2-3 or 4-0. This was also where members of the sophomore class constructed the daisy chain carried by the seniors on Senior Day. The space was named “Barrows Green” in 1953 to honor retiring Assistant Professor of Botany and Biology Florence L. Barrows. The plan to make the space a bowling green never materialized. More » -

January 13, 2011Dartmouth College Professor of History Alexander Howard Meneely (1899-1961) began his 17-year tenure when Dr. Park retired in 1944, faced with leading the College in a period of post-war confusion and rising costs. 1957- Peacock Pond Bridge
January 18, 2011Designed by Howard L. Rich, Rich & Tucker Assoc., this cement and brick bridge over Peacock Pond replaced a wooden structure built in the 1930s. The location of the bridge was shifted north from the original bridge, which had been closer to the rocks. It serves as the main entrance to Lower Campus. More » -

1957- U.S. Post Office
February 7, 2011Constructed on Wheaton land with Wheaton funds, the Norton Post Office is leased to the U. S. Postal Service. Until 1957, the town's post office had been in Pratt's Store. 1959- Chase Dining Center
January 31, 2011The round portion of Chase Dining Hall was built in 1959. Chase Square was added in 1964 to accommodate the increase in student enrollment. Chase Dining Hall was named in honor of William F. Chase, Treasurer of the College, Trustee from 1935-1963, and Vice President of the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank. The Trustees noted when Chase retired from the Board that "He was a man who gave encouragement and withheld criticism; a man who listened more than he spoke but a man whose words were always worth hearing." 1959- Meneely Hall
January 31, 2011Meneely Hall, the Humanities classroom building built in 1959, was the first classroom building to be built at Wheaton since 1911. Its construction was in response to the Trustees' decision to enlarge Wheaton's enrollment. It is ironic that this modern structure was named for the president who, soon after his arrival in 1944, had announced the Trustees' decision that all future construction at Wheaton should be in the Georgian style. February 2, 2011Dedicated in 1959 and designed by Howard L. Rich, of Rich & Tucker, Assoc., the campus architects, this residence hall was built on Lower Campus in response to the Trustees' decision to expand enrollment. This was the second dormitory to be built east of Peacock Pond.
