Newsmakers: Jean Principe ’74 and Debora Polizzi Champa ’75

Champa-PrincipeIf it’s true, as one fashion historian wrote, “Clothes are never a frivolity: they always mean something,” then the urban tote bags designed by Jean Principe ’74 (right, in photo) and Debora Polizzi Champa ’75 are a perfect union of style, function and philosophy. Principe, a psychologist, and Champa, an interior designer, both studied philosophy at Wheaton and had always wanted to collaborate on a creative project. The idea of stitching philosophical quotes on some sort of bag came after they saw a friend’s embroidering sewing machine. “Fashion and philosophy—a unique combination!” says Principe. Their study of philosophy was obviously useful as they selected the quotes featured on these stylish bags, but helped in other ways, too. “Our view is that people who study philosophy are open to new ideas, so that was reflected in our work and our ability to collaborate. We listened and were able to incorporate the other’s ideas, whether we initially agreed or not.” The two worked together on every aspect of the design and materials selection, as well as the complicated search to find a local manufacturer in New York City. “We have similar tastes, yet different styles,” says Principe, “but we both have very high standards.” Champa agrees, adding, “The ‘hands on’ approach is a way to maintain the quality of our product.” Currently for sale online at www.principepolizzi.com, the bags come in a variety of fabrics and quotes, and all are designed to hold a laptop in addition to other essentials.
