Wheaton grad wins Marshall Scholarship
Derron JR Wallace '07 has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship that will help further his efforts to improve the education systems of impoverished rural communities around the globe. The Bronx, N.Y., resident is one of only 40 students from U.S. colleges and universities to win the prestigious scholarship, which supports two years of graduate studies in the United Kingdom. Ms. Moran goes to Washington
Ellen Moran '88 has been tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as White House communications director. Moran is currently the executive director of EMILY's List, an organization that supports the election of pro-choice women candidates. (Read more.)
Wheaton students to join Teach for America
Two Wheaton student leaders have been chosen to participate in Teach for America, a select corps of college graduates who commit to teaching for two years in low-income communities across the nation. Each year, some 25,000 candidates apply for about 3,700 spots in the program. (Read more.)
Emmy winner
Elaine Brown '77 has won an Emmy award for public-service programming on HBO. The fast-moving television spot, Get Tested, features Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx and NBA stars and stresses the importance of getting tested for HIV/AIDS. (Read more and view the TV spot.)
Woman of many talents
Michele L'Heureux '88 is exhibiting her paintings at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, Mass., this month. Her solo show, entitled "Multiplicities," runs through December 21. L'Heureux has worked as a carpenter, environmental educator, grant writer, recruiter, marketing manager, copywriter, alumnae/i relations associate and graphic designer—but art is her first love. ATHLETICS
Three wins and a (squeaker) loss
The men's basketball team finished out the first semester by winning three of its final four games, with victories over visiting Salem State, Connecticut College and Roger Williams University. Losing to Bridgewater State by one point, the team now stands at 6-2 on the season. (Read more.)
