College within a college

Living-learning communities are a small but growing movement at Wheaton and across the country. With a faculty member in residence, a home-like atmosphere, and diverse extracurricular programming, Beard Hall is almost a college within a college. The mentor

When Tony Laing '96 was a student, he worked hard to find role models. Today he's working hard to make the job a bit easier for future male alums of color. As a first step, he's reaching out to Wheaton students through a Men of Color listserv that will connect students, staff, faculty and alumni to a support network that stretches around the globe. Using math in everyday life

I often hear the phrase, "I'm not a math person," and I have seen many a good student simply cringe at the thought of having to take Statistics or another mathematics course. For a math and computer science professor, this is troubling. I started thinking.

There are several factors in explaining this behavior. One problem is that as a nation, we simply do not expect much of our students as far as mathematics is concerned. In many countries, calculus is a requirement at the high school level. In the U.S., algebra is thought of as being difficult and perhaps not even useful. Contrast this to my first grade experience in Switzerland....
