I am interested in having a research partner to continue a publishing project involving two critical editions for A-R Editions: 1) Songs and Piano Pieces by Nineteenth- Century Black Americans, and 2) Obligato Songs from the Turn of the Century. Both these critical editions will do the following: convert nineteenth-century editions into modern notation, correcting mistakes and adding separate instrumental parts to make performances easily possible; make significant but long out-of-print music available to scholars and performers; and fill in voids in the American music canon. A student partner will learn Finale music notation skills, the particular challenges of music editing, and an understanding of American music history. This 2010-2011 project will build on summer work in process, and will probably be the final effort to get these editions to the publisher.
