News for 2012

Welcome (and Welcome Back) to Wheaton! LIS has had a busy summer creating new services and resources for you. Check out what's new for this year!

Third Library Entrance Open!

Coming in September, you can access the Library via the first floor of the Old Science Center. This entrance, between the Library’s book stack room and the Science Center corridor, will be open during posted hours.

The Scholars’ Lab

Please come to visit the Scholars’ Lab, our new student- and faculty-focused space, located behind the Information Desk on the Atrium Level of the Wallace Library. The Lab will be a space dedicated to developing and fostering conversations about 21st-century research skills, the latest technologies for teaching and learning, and various methods for scholarly communication.

We designed the Lab as a flexible space, where a variety of activities can take place with a minimum of set up time — including traditional lectures, small-group workshops, one-on-one meetings, peer presentations, even film viewings.

For the fall, we plan to use this space for research consultations, webinars, and student and faculty workshops. If you have any ideas for using this space, please let us know — and watch for announcements of activities to be held in our newest space.

Music Seminar Room revamped

New AV and new furniture will help this Library space serve two purposes: seminar room and student collaboration space.

New Library Resources

Take a look at the Library's new e-resources: the Illustrated London News Historical Archive 1842–2003, the National Geographic Magazine Archive 1888–1994, 2 additional JSTOR collections (Arts & Sciences X & XI), and 2 streaming video collections (VAST: Academic Video Online and Films on Demand Master Academic Collection).

Printing from Personal Laptops

Tired of waiting for a public computer? Now students can use their own laptop to print to the public printers located in the Wallace Library, Meneely Lobby, and Kollett Center. Get your free software client from Tech Support, and see this page for more information.

New online request form for loaner laptops for staff and faculty

Traveling? Need a laptop temporarily? Reserve a laptop computer from LIS using our new online request form.

New Library Subject Guides

Over the summer, the library liaisons collaborated on a reorganization of the Subject Guides. The guides were simplified to improve usability and to better guide students in their development of information fluency. The changes should make it easier to identify and select databases and library resources for research.

The New Language Lab

The Clark Language Lab was renovated over the summer. Older style carrels were removed and replaced with tables and chairs that are easily moveable to afford arranging the space for varied teaching and learning styles. Module furniture will allow for the Lab to be used for various evening functions as well. It is our hope that it will become a center for teaching and learning about language and culture at Wheaton.

New in the Archives

New Assistant Archivist Megan Wheaton-Book is here and is eager to work with you. New AV in the Archives Reading Room will help you compare digital objects with physical artifacts.
