College students across the country are expected to play a major role in this year's presidential election, and Wheaton encourages all students to vote. Forty-four years ago, Candy Yaghjian Waites '65 and friends helped draw attention to the ways in which some college students were left without a voice--and their efforts helped to change voting law in at least one state. Celebrating our own
At Homecoming, the Wheaton Alumnae/i Association will honor six alumnae/i who have achieved great heights in career, college and community: Christopher Denorfia '02, Cristen Scully Kromm '95, S'97, Bavi Rivera '68, Blakely Fetridge Bundy '66, Susan Walden Wieland '60 and Virginia Olivier Howard '48. Nominations for next year's awards and for positions on the association's board of directors are most welcome.  For information or forms, click here.

Founding mother
ebw.jpgShe was the primary founder of the school that became Wheaton College, and she guided Wheaton during the first 75 years of its history. She also married the town roustabout and turned him into a solid pillar of the community. Paul Helmreich, professor of history emeritus, told Eliza Baylies Wheaton's story at the college's Founders Day gathering last month. Read his talk here.

PHOTOS OF THE MONTH

The Pamberi Steel Orchestra of San Juan, Trinidad, visited Wheaton for three days (Oct. 15-17), treating campus to performances and demos and inspiring Wheaton's own steel band, the newly formed Lymin' Lyons. On the first day of the band's residency, music students got to try their hands at the tantalizing musical drums, which the band will be leaving behind for the Lymin' Lyons. (View slideshow.)

ATHLETICS

Hall of famer
Luis Reis, head coach for Wheaton's highly successful women's soccer team, has been selected for induction into the New England Soccer Hall of Fame. Coach Reis will be honored with his fellow inductees at a Nov. 1 banquet in East Providence, Rhode Island. (Read more.)
