Thirty Wheaton students and five staff and faculty members spent a week in New Orleans during January break. There they worked on a range of service projects that included cleaning up City Park; distributing energy-efficient light bulbs, blankets and other supplies; and even feeding and walking pets for an animal rescue group.

A committee of six student leaders, with VISTA volunteer Katherine Jennings, planned and arranged the trip through Relief Spark, a community-based organization working in New Orleans and Southern California.

“One of our main goals now is to educate the Wheaton community and other family and friends about what we saw and learned in New Orleans,” said organizer Greta Phillips ’09. “Some residents feel that they have been forgotten, so it is our job to tell everyone that there is still need in New Orleans.”
