PARENTS' CORNER
Student loans: Better access
Wheaton has received approval to participate in the federally-funded William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. Beginning in 2008-2009, the direct loan program will ensure that Wheaton students have access to federal Stafford and PLUS loans, allowing families to avoid the volatile market for college loans offered by third-party lenders. Spring is the season for national scholarship awards, and Wheaton students and grads are once again earning an impressive share of them. Click on a student's name to read more:
- Michael Freese '08, Meghan Kenny '08, Esther Jeong '08, Ashlan Musante '08 and Derron J.R. Wallace '07: Fulbright scholarships for teaching and research abroad
- Blair Rossetti '09: Goldwater Scholarship for outstanding achievement in science
- Caroline Teague '08: Scholarships from the St. Andrews Society of New York to support graduate studies at the University of Edinburgh.
Violence as a public health issue
According to the public-health leader Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith, violence is not inevitable. It is a preventable societal illness. Prothrow-Stith will address this perspective in an April 29 campus lecture titled "Violence Prevention: A Public Health Mandate." (Read more.)
Supporting women in math
Assistant Professor of Mathematics Rachelle DeCoste has won a $6,000 grant from the Mathematical Association of America/Tensor Foundation to support a workshop for women in mathematics, to be held at Wheaton in July. (Read more.)
‘I'm Austin Simko, and I approved this message'
It's must-see TV. In his campaign for president of the Student Government Association, Austin Simko '09 took his appeal to the Web by creating a mockumentary-style political commercial and posting in on YouTube. (Watch video.) (Read about election results in The Wire.)
