DESCRIPTION:Mark Johnson MD PhD\, the Maroun Semaan Chair in Neurosurgery\, and chair and professor of neurological surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School\, will speak at Wheaton College\, Monday November 9\, 2020 at 5pm\, via Zoom. According to a recent interview on the Voices of UMass Med podcast\, Dr. Johnson\, grew up in Memphis\, Tenn.\, and his early thoughts of becoming a race car driver gave way to medicine. “When I was a kid\, I dreamed of doing something really significant.” Now a world-renowned neurosurgeon\, Dr. Johnson said “I often say to people I’m a scientist in a neurosurgeon’s body\,” and he adds “There are very few things that we do that are routine\, mundane and inconsequential.” \nDr. Johnson has been a great supporter of Wheaton’s students in the past\, having spoken about medicine and his personal career path with students in the Pre-Health Society before. Join students in Wheaton’s Pre-Health Society and BIO 324 Neurobiology course to hear Dr. Johnson deliver a talk entitled “Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus”. SUMMARY:FabAcademy Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Wheaton is offering a new course this semester called FabAcademy and will be holding an info session for students who would like to learn more. If you are interested in participating in FabAcademy this year or in the future\, we recommend you attending. Students must be on campus next semester to take this course. \nSign up here. \n  \n“At the Fab Academy\, you will learn how to envision\, prototype and document your ideas through many hours of hands-on experience with digital fabrication tools.” Under the leadership of global instructor Neil Gershenfeld\, Wheaton students will be exposed to  innovative communities and ideas at a global level over the course of six months. Gershenfeld\, MIT Professor and Director of the Center for Bits + Atoms\, originally taught “How to Make Almost Anything” as an MIT course which grew into FabAcademy in 2009. Students who successfully complete FabAcademy will graduate with an extensive digital portfolio detailing their progress and final project. They will also gain the knowledge needed to take an idea from prototype to product. Wheaton will be the first college in New England to offer FabAcademy to its students. For more information\, visit the website! \nIf you have any questions about this course\, please email Madison at dunaway_madison@wheatoncollege.edu

SUMMARY:Virtual Gallery Opening—Postcards from the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is an open call for postcard-sized responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. All submissions will be included in the exhibition and become part of the Wheaton College Permanent Collection. The exhibition is an effort to combat the social isolation this virus has forced on us. It is a chance to see\, through the eyes of another\, an expression of this experience. It is an opportunity to come together when we still have to remain physically apart. Submissions are welcome through Oct. 10 at u.nu/postcards. \nRegister on Zoom here. \nThe exhibition will be on display October 20–November 24 2020. \nDue to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic\, the Beard & Weil Galleries will only be open to the on-campus Wheaton community during the fall 2020 semester. We will make every effort to make our exhibitions available virtually during this time. We appreciate your patience as we navigate this global challenge and we look forward to welcoming you back to campus when we are able to resume normal operations.

SUMMARY:Virtual Gallery Opening—It's Elemental: Earth
DESCRIPTION:Third in a series of four biannual exhibitions curated by students enrolled in ARTH335: Exhibition Design\, It’s Elemental: Earth considers how earth—in all of its forms—affects our world. Using objects from the Gebbie Archives & Special Collections and the Permanent Collection\, each exhibition will explore one of the four classical elements: water\, air\, earth\, fire. \nRegister here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwode6uqTgqEtI2bsa3bR6ihGoaAyDM3B0Y \nThe exhibition will be on display September 10–October 10\, 2020. \nDue to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic\, the Beard & Weil Galleries will only be open to the on-campus Wheaton community during the fall 2020 semester. We will make every effort to make our exhibitions available virtually during this time. We appreciate your patience as we navigate this global challenge and we look forward to welcoming you back to campus when we are able to resume normal operations.\n \n
