DESCRIPTION:Futurist Bruce Sterling will critically examine the past\, present\, and future state of Artificial Intelligence. “AI is not entrepreneurial in spirit\, it is not exciting\, cutting edge start up innovation.  AI is big tech oligarchy.” \nBruce Sterling is a writer\, journalist\, design philosopher and futurist.  He has written a dozen science fiction novels and many short stories for which he earned several Hugo awards and other prizes.  As a writer\, as well as an editor of anthologies like MIT Technology Review’s Twelve Tomorrows\, Bruce has been playing a main role in shaping the genre of cyberpunk.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ada McKenzie Thomas\, Asst. Professor of English\, for an upcoming Faculty Research Talk\, Abbey Lincoln’s Spiritual Roots. \nPresenters will begin by discussing their topic\, and each session will close with a question and answer segment. All presentations are virtual and free and the Zoom link will be sent the day before this discussion. \nDescription: In this talk\, I examine Abbey Lincoln’s rootedness in spirituality as evinced in her poetry and songwriting from the latter part of her career. Her albums\, Talking to the Sun (1983)\, Devil’s Got Your Tongue (1992)\, Wholly Earth (1999)\, as well as poems from her unpublished collection\, In a Circle\, Everything is Up\, reveal her lifelong identity as a fervent roots-seeker\, a spiritual sojourner in search of truth and understanding. \nA multifaceted artist whose career traversed the Civil Rights and Black Arts Movements\, and intersected with Black feminisms and Pan-Africanist discourses\, Lincoln’s concerns frequently echo those of other writers and artists of the various eras through which she lived. Lincoln’s thematic eclecticism is a hallmark of her songwriting\, poetry\, and prose\, however her work remains rooted in a deeply personal and spiritual exploration. This talk explores the motifs of this spiritual sojourn emerging from Lincoln’s latter works\, as based upon the archival research that I have conducted for my manuscript on Lincoln’s life in letters\, Aminata: Abbey Lincoln’s Song of Faith\, to be published by Rutgers University Press. \nRegister

Prioritize social-emotional learning. \nPresenters will begin by discussing their topic\, and each session will close with a question and answer segment. However\, many (if not all!) teachers and families would agree that we want our children to be confident\, capable readers and writers\, and that we also want them to be able to participate in classroom and community life\, get along with their peers\, develop their talents\, and learn to make responsible decisions. This talk will lay out the theoretical and empirical support behind how teaching SEL in school can positively support children’s literacy development\, and vice versa. Practical suggestions will be given for how teachers and families of elementary-aged children can leverage synergies between SEL and literacy; for example\, criteria for selecting read-aloud picture books that can address goals in both content areas. \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Join Sarah Christensen\, Brown/Wheaton Faculty Fellow\, History Department\, for an upcoming Faculty Research Talk\, Marriage as a Path to Freedom for Enslaved Women in the Early Middle Ages. \nPresenters will begin by discussing their topic\, and each session will close with a question and answer segment. All presentations are virtual and free and the Zoom link will be sent the day before this discussion. \nDescription: I examine how enslaved women in the early Middle Ages approached marriage and childbearing as means to secure emancipation. According to a long legal tradition dating to the Roman classical period and lingering in the law codes of both medieval western Europe and Byzantium\, marriage offered enslaved women a change in social position as well as a specific transformation of legal status from unfree to free. Looking at legal documents and narrative sources\, I examine how individual women strategically leveraged marriage and childbearing to achieve desires that included but were not limited to emancipation\, and how these women calculated possibilities for improvement using knowledge of their legal status\, social standing\, and sexual value. \nRegister

His talk is titled ““Minimalism Is History Now”: Bang on a Can and Minimalism in the Late Twentieth Century”. Professor Robin is a regular contributor to the New York Times\, and his most recent book Industry is now available from Oxford University Press. Robin’s research explores how institutions structure the creation\, dissemination\, and reception of contemporary classical music in the United States. DESCRIPTION:Schooling for Critical Consciousness addresses how schools can help Black and Latinx youth resist the negative effects of racial injustice and challenge its root causes. Scott Seider and Daren Graves draw on a four-year longitudinal study examining how five different mission-driven urban high schools foster critical consciousness among their students. How those responses are effectively enacted is a more complex set of questions. This conference will focus on the political potentials of care and compassion as practiced in the arts. Participants will reflect on the differences between hearing and actively listening\, and between speaking with and speaking to\, in a variety of art-centered exchanges.\n\nHow can we amplify inclusive\, polyphonic narratives based on lived experiences\, instead of the perceived authority of academic or fine arts expertise? How might art workers conceive of their role as facilitation for collaborations and conversations about justice taking place outside cultural institutions? DESCRIPTION:Patricia Encarnación and Crys Yin will share their artwork and discuss how their art practice connects with their activist work. Yin’s paintings\, drawings and sculptures deal with cultural misconnections and embrace the comedic side of personal experiences. Encarnación is an Afro-Dominican artist who explores perceptions of being Caribbean through quotidian objects\, landscapes\, and the aesthetics she was exposed to growing up in her homeland\, the Dominican Republic. Both artists have work currently on display in To Scatter or Sow: Diaspora in Contemporary Art in the Beard and Weil Galleries. Hanno\, members of the faculty\, and alumni leaders for a memorial program celebrating the life and Wheaton legacy of Dale Rogers Marshall\, who served as President of the college from 1992 – 2004. \nHer Wheaton presidency was defined by a strong commitment to the liberal arts\, diversity\, and social justice. She led recruitment efforts for a diverse and exceptional group of scholars to join the Wheaton faculty\, and she instituted new programs aimed at increasing diversity on campus.
