DESCRIPTION:For many scholars and journalists\, cinema seems to be in its death throes\, especially in terms of theatrical viewing. Yet horror movies top the box office\, with studios like A24\, Blumhouse\, and Neon churning out a constant stream of terror amid excitement around so-called “elevated horror.” How can we explain this seeming contradiction? Please join us for a talk with Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece\, Associate Professor\, English and Film Studies\, who will take listeners on a brief tour of the history of weird and eco horror film and touch on some of its most salient characteristics in order to theorize what it means to watch horror in the theater versus streaming and why we want to watch it today. \n

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist/Filmmaker Rowan Haber
DESCRIPTION:Rowan will screen and discuss their work in documentary\, narrative\, and commercial. They will cover the ins and outs of making your first film\, fundraising for your project\, and how to get your start. Rowan will ask the students questions\, and Leah will facilitate a discussion afterward. This is not to be missed if you are an aspiring filmmaker or visual artist. Ro has found ways to do both successfully. Bring your dinner and your friends!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRowan West Haber is an aesthetically minded Writer/Director.  An MFA graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts\, they were a Sundance Momentum Fellow\,  a Sundance New Frontier Lab\, and an Art of Practice Fellow. They were selected for the Universal Pictures Directing Lab\, AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women\, Film Independent’s Episodic Lab and Project Involve\, Outfest’s Screenwriting Lab\, and were a shadowing director on FX’s Pose. They were featured on The Alice Initiative’s 2018 list of directors ready to helm studio films\, Indiewire’s 8 Best Trans Directors Working Today\, and have been a fellow at Yaddo\, MacDowell\, and UCross Artist Residencies. \nThey won a Webby\, New Orleans Film Festival\, and LA Film Festival awards and were nominated for a GLAAD award for their series\, New Deep South. Their series Braddock\, PA (Topic) gained critical attention from The New York Times and The New Yorker. They directed Stonewall Forever for Stink Studios as well as Celestial for Tribeca Studios x Bulgari\, and have done commercial work for Mercedes\, Pepsi\, Spotify\, Facebook and Apretude to name a few. \nRecently\, they directed the finale for the FX x Killer Films Gotham and GLAAD  Award-nominated  series Pride. They are currently directing a feature documentary EPed by Lauren Greenfield and produced by Caryn Capotosto entitled We Are Pat about the 90s SNL cult figure It’s Pat. They are also attached to direct Amasia Entertainment’s (Green Hornet\, Them That Follow) trans coming of age film\, Handsome and their film Shell.ai\, which is a modern feminist horror retelling of the Frankenstein story from the perspective of a female technologist\, is being produced by Seaview (Slave Play\, Reality). They are also attached to direct the feature adaptation of Brontez Purnell’s award-winning novel  Since I Laid My Burden Down\, which is being adapted to screen by Savannah Knoop and just won the 2021 SFFILM Rainin Grant . They were  an advisor for Sundance’s first Trans Possibilities Lab  and are currently a Sundance Humanities Sustainability Fellow. His work has been published in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Rolling Stone magazine and other media. In addition  to reporting regularly on American new religious movements\, notably the Black Hebrew Israelites\, he has worked internationally from newsrooms in Ramallah\, Sana\, and Beijing.

SUMMARY:Applied Ethics  in the Hardest of Places by LTC Nathaniel B. Davis
DESCRIPTION:Despite the recent urging of high-profile figures like Pope Francis and Senator Bernie Sanders to establish a “moral economy\,” we have not. Free-market advocates hold fast to justifications that amount to variations on the “invisible hand” theory of Adam Smith — that the economy is not a moral space\, but one that relies on a free and fair market\, self-interested (as opposed to selfish) actors and amoral (as opposed to immoral) calculation to arrive at the most efficient and innovative outcomes. The invisible hand of the market must be allowed to act; placing moral limits on the economy\, they argue\, would hinder this flourishing. \nHumanity has tried to limit war on moral terms since Cicero first outlined the Just War Ethic\, an effort that continues to this day. In war\, the reversion to barbarism can be tempting in the heat of battle\, and as passions and hatreds rise between peoples. However\, even here\, humanity has managed to place moral limits.  In the modern world\, the Just War Ethic may seem like a distant abstraction; but its effects influence the relationship between war and society in profound ways. Michael Walzer\, perhaps the most influential living philosopher of just war theories\, articulated the importance of seeking to establish moral principles there: “War is the hardest place: if comprehensive and consistent moral judgments are possible there\, they are possible everywhere.” \nIf we can seek to regulate war in terms of morality\, there is no reason such morality cannot be equally applied to the economy\, as Walzer indicates.  War is inherently unjust\, but the Just War Ethic has made it more just. The economy is not moral\, but a foundational ethics of the economy could make it more moral. The product of such ethics would be decidedly imperfect\, but it would be better than no ethics at all. \nReception to follow in Mary Lyons Wooley Room

SUMMARY:Where It Used to be Home: Writing Russia and Ukraine under the Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Olga Livshin will discuss how culture\, translation\, history\, current events and her own biography intermingle in her 2019 book of poems\, A Life Replaced \, which reflects on the experience of living as an immigrant under the Trump administration and with Putin’s war on Ukraine looming. Raised in Odessa and Moscow\, Livshin writes witness poetry about xenophobia\, war\, and strongmen at the helm on both sides of the world. The book braids original poetry in English with translations from Anna Akhmatova\, the great poet of 20th-century Russia\, and Vladimir Gandelsman\, fellow immigrant and winner of the Moscow Reckoning\, Russia’s highest prize for poetry. Livshin’s poems\, translations\, and essays appear in The Kenyon Review and Poetry International\, and are widely published. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Geoffrey Collins\, Professor of Geology\, will give the third Faculty Scholar Speaker Series talk\, “Alien Ocean: How the geology of frozen worlds helps us to search for life inside Jupiter’s moon Europa“. \nJupiter’s moon Europa hosts a vast underground ocean that may be suitable for life as we know it. Dr. Collins will give a talk on his research looking into evidence for plate tectonics on Europa\, which could be the key to keeping Europa’s ocean habitable. He will discuss this in the larger context of what we know about Europa and why we think it’s one of the best places to look for life beyond Earth. He will also describe his involvement in building the Europa Clipper spacecraft to explore this mysterious moon in the next decade. \nThe talk\, suitable for general audiences\, is open to the Wheaton and Norton communities and will be livestreamed. DESCRIPTION:Tanya Luhrmann is the Watkins University Professor in the Anthropology Department at Stanford University\, the author of When God Talks Back\, and co-editor and contributor to Our Most Troubling Madness: Case Studies in Schizophrenia across Cultures. She has done\nethnography on the streets of Chicago with homeless and psychotic women\, and worked with people who hear voices in Chennai\, Accra and the South Bay. She has also done fieldwork with evangelical Christians who seek to hear God speak back\, with Zoroastrians who set out to create a more mystical faith\, and with people who practice magic. She uses a combination of ethnographic and experimental methods to understand the phenomenology of unusual sensory experiences\, the way ideas about minds and persons shape them\, and what we can learn from this social shaping that can help us to help those whose voices are distressing.
