SUMMARY:Readings by the Writer: Kate Colby
DESCRIPTION:Kate Colby reads from her work including Paradoxx\, her new collection of essays. “In Paradoxx\, Colby applies her humor and exacting intelligence to teasing out tangles in relationships between memory\, signification\, and human perception. A one-hundred-day chronicle of a dark period in the author’s life\, this tightly-wound lyric essay is also a memoir of growing up in the late 20th century and stumbling into the 21st.” (Essay Press) Colby was a founding board member of the Gloucester Writers Center in Massachusetts\, where she now serves on the advisory board. She grew up in Massachusetts and currently lives in Providence\, where she teaches at UPenn.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Flexibility: An Open Conversation About Syllabi Design
DESCRIPTION:Mental and physical health\, for both students and faculty\, are connected to the workload and intellectual labors we carry as a learning community. Syllabi are ideally designed to provide faculty and students with a roadmap and a clear set of guidelines to foster a productive\, transparent working relationship. As we begin a new semester\, student leaders and WIIH Fellows invite you to an open conversation reflecting on what is fair and equitable when it comes to expectations surrounding coursework. Are there ways we can think past the “either-or” fallacy of compassionate flexibility vs. intellectual rigor? Or of respect for difference vs. respect for the time and labor of others? Can we find more space in our demanding lives to calmly articulate the individual priorities and values that inform all faculty-student conversations throughout the semester? \nAll are welcome. \nPresented by the Evelyn Danzig Haas ’39 Visiting Artists Program.
