February 19: Betty Friedan publishes "The Feminine Mystique." The examination of American women's lives in the decades after WWII was the author's first book and is widely credited with igniting the women's liberation movement. Friedan, who died in 2006, went on to co-found the National Organization for Women and serve as the group's first president.
