Activities? I play for the Wheaton College Women’s Rugby team and I also work at the Imaging Center for Undergraduate Collaboration (ICUC) in the science center. This summer I worked as a research assistant…researching chemotherapy drugs for treatment of multiple myeloma.
Why Wheaton? I love the small class sizes. Your teachers really get to know you and want to help you out in any way possible. They make every effort to make sure that you understand the material and provide assistance whenever you need it, even when it comes time to find a career after Wheaton.
Favorite class/professor and why? My favorite class was microbiology and immunology taught by Professor Lanni, which I took spring of my junior year. My favorite professor is Dr. Bob because not only have I had him as a professor but he is also my advisor. He has helped me so much in choosing what classes to take and getting my academic life organized.
Something interesting about me: I am a twin! Her name is Erin and she also goes to Wheaton.
My research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute: This summer I worked as a research assistant/summer student under oncologist Dr. Kenneth C. Anderson in his laboratory researching chemotherapy drugs for treatment of multiple myeloma. I ran cytotoxicity assays, which are experiments that test how lethal a drug is on cancerous cells. I mainly used a test called an MTT assay. I also ran other experiments such as combination plates, which tests the effectiveness of combining two different drugs in varying doses.
How I heard about the opportunity: My mother is a Nurseanesthetist at Winchester Hospital in Winchester, MA. She and Dr. Anderson are good friends and upon hearing of my interest in working in medical research he asked me if I would like to work in his lab for the summer.
What I learned: In addition to learning various experimental protocols, I also learned laboratory safety and sterile practices such as how to handle biohazardous materials.
Future goals: After Wheaton, I am hoping to go to Physician’s Assistant School at Northeastern University in Boston. After that I want to return to Dana-Farber and work as a PA.
