The Collection: By the Numbers

As of November 2014:

  • More than 6,000 items in the Permanent Collection, not including potsherds, stamps, and uncatalogued coins;
  • 2500–1100 BCE, the age of the oldest item: a Cycladic figure;
  • 260 paintings;
  • More than 75 sculptures;
  • 63 woven objects, including a Haida Hat from British Columbia, in the Kilham basket collection;
  • 54 candlesticks;
  • 3 works by Rembrandt;
  • 5 prints - an etching, a color lithograph, a wood engraving, and 2 poster reproductions - by Picasso;
  • 42 objects displayed in the exhibition The Art of Intellectual Community: Early Modern Objects and Pedagogy, which included a gallery guide written by students;
  • 17 19th- and early 20th-century French photographs featured in podcasts written and recorded by students;
  • 6 prints by Francisco de Goya and nearly 60 additional collection objects to be displayed in 2 student-curated exhibitions opening on 19 November 2014;
  • More than 300 objects used for class assignments or student research projects during the 2013-2014 academic year; and
  • 12-15 students who work as Collection Assistants each semester.
