SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Drug Addiction: Real People\, Real Stories
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of Into Light Project’s Drug Addiction: Real People Real Stories. We will hear from Theresa Clower\, Into Light Project Founder and others involved with this important work. \nWheaton College has partnered with the national non-profit the INTO LIGHT Project to create an exhibition of graphite portraits\, personal items\, and written narratives of 40 Massachusetts residents who have died of drug overdose or poisoning. The INTO LIGHT Project is working to organize an exhibition like this in every state. \nOur goal is to help destigmatize overdose and substance use disorder and to open up the conversation about the opioid epidemic. The exhibition brings together medicine\, mental health\, public health\, and visual and creative arts. We are using art to connect\, humanize\, and heal. \nThe reception is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Conversation with artist Jeff Kasper
DESCRIPTION:Join us online for a conversation with Jeff Kasper to talk about accessibility in Galleries and Museums. \nJeff Kasper (he/him) is an interdisciplinary artist\, writer\, and educator\, specializing in public art\, design\, and social engagement. He creates text-based projects\, social spaces\, publications\, games\, objects\, exhibitions\, community education\, and workshops\, often in partnership with community-based and non-profit organizations. Much of his recent work merges the tools and techniques of graphic design with participatory learning and contemplative practices\, to examine the dynamics of social support\, proximity\, and safety. His artworks center dialogical\, reflective\, and instructional texts that often prompt meditation\, relationship building\, and serious play. Through his arts-based organizing\, he opens up spaces for (re)imagining accessible and trauma-aware futures. \nZOOM LINK: https://wheatoncollege-edu.zoom.us/j/92372066197

SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibition—Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Perspectives on Mass Criminalization
DESCRIPTION:February 18–April 14\, 2022  \nThe exhibition title is borrowed from Angela Davis’s 2015 book and is focused on prison abolition. The work in the show centers on the perspectives of people who have been or are currently incarcerated. Each of the exhibited projects allows us to see the impact the carceral system has on individuals\, offering the viewer a chance to reevaluate their perspective on the dehumanizing and harmful effects of incarceration. But each of these projects also offers solutions in the form of information\, actions\, ways to connect\, and alternatives to incarceration. \nUltimately\, through the drawings\, video performances\, photography\, writing\, and gardens\, the exhibition encourages visitors to ask “What would a future without prisons look like? What would it take to get there?” \nMasks are required in the galleries regardless of vaccination status. \nGallery hours:\nTuesday\, Wednesday\, Friday\, & Saturday 1-5:00 p.m.\nThursdays 1-8:00 p.m.
