SUMMARY:2025 MLK Legacy Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 MLK Legacy Celebration will take place on Wednesday\, February 12\, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. in Hindle Auditorium. The keynote address is “From the Valleys to the Mountaintops: Leadership for a Time Such as This.” It will be led by Dr. Indira M. Henard ’03\, DSW\, MSW\, Executive Director of the DC Rape Crisis Center. Dr. Henard has worked with organizations across the country and around the world to help organizations respond to sexual violence in their communities. Nationally recognized for her leadership\, Dr. Henard is a member of Wheaton’s Class of 2003\, and a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. \nAs part of our annual event\, we will award Wheaton’s prestigious MLK Legacy Award to three outstanding community members. We welcome your nominations for this award. The award is presented to one student and one faculty or staff member who exemplifies Dr. King’s values through their actions and leadership. \nIf you would like to nominate someone for the award\, please email deal@wheatoncollege.edu with the name of the nominee(s) and a brief description (one paragraph is sufficient) of why you believe they should be recognized. All nominations should be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, January 31\, 2025. You are welcome to submit as many nominations as you wish\, as there are likely many deserving individuals in our community. The selection committee comprises the President’s Council and DEAL leadership. \nThe event will also feature the MLK Legacy Student Creativity Showcase winners.

SUMMARY:Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Legacy Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Our annual award ceremony will occur on the evening of Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023 at 7 PM in Weber Theatre. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Loretta Ross. Loretta Ross is an award-winning\, nationally-recognized expert on racism and racial justice\, women’s rights\, and human rights. Her work emphasizes the intersectionality of social justice issues and how intersectionality can fuel transformation. Ross is a visiting associate professor at Smith College teaching courses on white supremacy\, race and culture in America\, human rights\, and calling in the calling out culture. She also is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellow\, Class of 2022 \, for her work as an advocate of Reproductive Justice and Human Rights. \nAnother highlight of the Celebration is our Creativity Showcase\, where we share and celebrate student creative work that offers tangible reflection on King’s philosophies and principles of equity\, justice and/or peace. SUMMARY:MLK Book Drive Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:The Diversity\, Equity\, and Access Leadership (DEAL) will be launching an MLK Book Drive from January 18 – February 19\, 2021. \nWe are asking our campus community to come together and donate gently used/new books by Black authors and/or centered on Black stories and experiences. All books will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South-Taunton Clubhouse. The books will be split between the Taunton and Brockton location. The children receiving the books range from K-12th grade. Drop off locations are the Marshall Center Deck and the Campus Mail Room.
