Access, descriptions, and help guides for the numerous sources of images that Wheaton owns and licenses.


  • Wheaton licenses ARTstor, a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences. (No login needed from on-campus; free registration for advanced features.)
  • Encyclopedic coverage of art, archaeology, architecture, design, and film, Oxford Art Online includes many internal and links to external images. (No login needed from on-campus. Also check out their helpful Oxford Art Quickstart Guide)

  • First MezzanineWallace Library Fine Arts Collection
    The first and second mezzanine levels of Wallace Library are devoted to Fine Arts materials, many of which are filled with images. Search the collection using the HELIN Catalog.
  • Archives & Special CollectionsEliza Baylies Wheaton
    The Marion B. Gebbie Archives & Special Collections (located in Wallace Library - open Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm and by appt.) houses thousands of historical images including a great many related to the history of Wheaton College.

    Search multiple sources of creative commons licensed material directly from the creative commons site.

  • Wikimedia Commons

    An excellent site devoted to public domain and creative commons licensed images.

  • Flickr Creative Commons

    Searches the popular image sharing site for images licensed explicitly as available for reuse.

  • Getty Images

    Stock commercial photos and images. Their embed tool lets you freely use thousands of images on web sites, blogs, and social media.

  • Library of Congress - Prints and Photographs

    Contains catalog records and digital images representing a cross-section of pictures held by the Prints & Photographs Division of the LoC. Many are in the public domain.

  • NYPL Digital Gallery

    Hundreds of thousands of digital images of historical materials from the New York Public Library. Images may be freely downloaded for research and personal purposes.
