Giving

City Seminars, West Coast

Posted on December 9, 2010

The celebration of Go Beyond: Campaign for Wheaton is headed to the West Coast in January with back-to-back events in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The City Seminars series offers alumnae/i, parents and friends the opportunity to experience the college's unique curriculum. Professors Josh Stenger (English and film studies) and Gabriela Torres (anthropology) will present provocative presentations that illustrate the way in which study at Wheaton today transcends the traditional boundaries that separate fields of study.

City Seminars/San Francisco will be held at Cavallo Point in Sausalito on Saturday, Jan. 22. Professor Torres will present a talk entitled, The Power of the Gift: Finding Economy in Culture, exploring the role that gifts play in a differing cultural contexts, particularly in the online world. Professor Stenger's presentation, Hackers, Pirates and Jailbreakers, Oh My:  Information Outlaws in the Age of Digital Copyrights, will examine how technology both facilitates sharing information and presents new challenges for protecting and transferring intellectual property.

City Seminars/Los Angeles will be held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Sunday, Jan. 23. Professor Torres' presentation, Go West! A Journey into How Culture Travels, will take attendees on a musical and visual journey that explores how culture travels and is transformed by the ways that we make meaning in our world. Stenger's talk, The Internet Strikes Back: Why Hollywood Needs to "Friend" Social Media, examines the convergence of Internet culture and the movie industry.
