SUMMARY:Puerto Rican Poetic Resistance(s) to Continued Colonialism: Interactive workshop with Dr. Melinda González
DESCRIPTION:Poetry-based art movements have functioned as an important locus of community organizing and political discourse across both Puerto Rico and the U.S. since at least the 1930s. In this interactive workshop\, scholar-activist-poet Dr. Melinda González will perform poems\, facilitate a poetry writing workshop\, and discuss the role of poetry spaces in disaster recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria across the Puerto Rican diaspora.\n\nThis workshop is sponsored by the Evelyn Danzig Haas ’39 Visiting Artists Program\, the Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning\, WorldFest\, and the Departments of English and Anthropology.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Social Justice and Community Impact\, in partnership with Safe Zone at Wheaton\, invites you to join Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell\, authors of the book “LOVING: A Photographic History of Men in Love\, 1850s-1950s” in a discussion and Q&A-style program. \nIn-person seating is first come\, first served. The first photograph came from an antique store in Dallas. The photograph was of two men in a loving embrace mixed within random photos of a Dallas neighborhood from the 1920s. [Their] collection of over 2800 vintage photos of romantic couples spanning the 100 years between the 1850s and 1950s is the basis for [their] book. \nLOVING: A Photographic History shines a new light on the most written about\, dramatized\, or filmed emotions — love. The pages of our book portray love\, but also courage — the courage that it took to memorialize that unmistakable look that occurs between two people in love. LOVING: A Photographic History celebrates a loving past. A past that points towards the future. It’s message is for everyone. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibition—Domestic State
DESCRIPTION:As we have all been required to spend concentrated time in our homes during the COVID-19 pandemic\, domestic spaces have developed new contexts and significance. Through humor\, tragedy\, the magical and the mundane\, the artists in Domestic State explore the meaning and narrative of domestic spaces and objects. Han Seok You photographs himself in the US and Korea\, in an effort to define what “home” means. Manal Abu Shaheen’s series Julian follows the experiences of her brother\, a Lebanese-American single father\, raising his family on a Pennsylvania farm. Elizabeth Duffy’s installations and objects allude to the apparent comforts of home while revealing its contradictions. Shabnam Janessari’s saturated paintings depict spaces that empower the complex realities of Iranian female identity. In addition to work by contemporary artists\, pieces from Wheaton’s Permanent Collection offer a contrast between past and present.\n\nFeatured artists include: Manal Abu Shaheen\, Maria G. Baker\, Elizabeth Duffy\, Shabnam Janessari\, Andrew Raftery\, and Han Seok You.
