SUMMARY:Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
DESCRIPTION:Mark Johnson MD PhD\, the Maroun Semaan Chair in Neurosurgery\, and chair and professor of neurological surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School\, will speak at Wheaton College\, Monday November 9\, 2020 at 5pm\, via Zoom. According to a recent interview on the Voices of UMass Med podcast\, Dr. Johnson\, grew up in Memphis\, Tenn.\, and his early thoughts of becoming a race car driver gave way to medicine. “When I was a kid\, I dreamed of doing something really significant.” Now a world-renowned neurosurgeon\, Dr. Johnson said “I often say to people I’m a scientist in a neurosurgeon’s body\,” and he adds “There are very few things that we do that are routine\, mundane and inconsequential.” \nDr. Johnson has been a great supporter of Wheaton’s students in the past\, having spoken about medicine and his personal career path with students in the Pre-Health Society before. Join students in Wheaton’s Pre-Health Society and BIO 324 Neurobiology course to hear Dr. Johnson deliver a talk entitled “Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus”. There will be time for question-and-answer about Dr. Johnson’s science and career as well. \nZoom link to be posted when available.

SUMMARY:Faculty Speaker Series - Dr. Francisco de Alba
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fourth Faculty Speaker Series event\, which celebrates the scholarly research and creative works of Wheaton’s faculty members. \nDr. Francisco de Alba will explore how Madrid’s collective sensibility changed in the last part of Franco’s dictatorship. Sex\, drugs\, and fashion were ways in which people engaged in new behaviours that made the authoritarian and Catholic outlook of the regime obsolete\, creating the basis for the transition to democracy. \nThis hour-long talk and moderated Q&A is based Dr. de Alba’s recently published book\, Sex\, Drugs\, and Fashion in 1970s Madrid. \nPre-registration is required for this virtual event\, which will be held via Zoom. \nIf you require accommodations for this event\, please contact Megan Brooks at brooks_megan@wheatoncollege.edu by November 4.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Hashtag: The Art and Activism of #BlackLivesMatter
DESCRIPTION:Patrisse Cullors is an internationally recognized artist\, activist\, and advocate for civil rights and social justice. In 2013\, she and two fellow organizers—Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi—created what they described as a “Black-centered political will and movement building project.” They called it #BlackLivesMatter. Although many people know it only as a social media hashtag\, it is far more than that. Cullors will discuss the art and activism behind\, beyond and of the BLM hashtag\, and take questions from moderators and attendees. \nRegister on Zoom here.
