DESCRIPTION:To Scatter or Sow: Diaspora in Contemporary Art serves as a central event for Wheaton’s campus-wide initiative to consider Diasporas: Economies\, Boundaries\, and Kinship. The title of the show is taken from the Greek root of the word\, and evokes not only the dispersal inherent in diaspora but also the potential for rich growth. Framing the multi-faceted idea of diasporas through the work of eight contemporary artists\, the exhibition includes video\, photography\, painting\, ceramics and text-based work. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fifth Faculty Speaker Series event\, celebrating the scholarly research and creative works of Wheaton’s faculty members. \nDr. Jessie Knowlton\, Assistant Professor of Biology\, will present a talk titled “Birds\, bees\, and humans: why we should care about all species.” Dr. Knowlton will talk about her research with Wheaton students on the impacts of environmental change on bird and bee communities in Ecuador. She will also explain why what happens to other species can make a big difference to humanity as well\, and what we can learn from paying attention to the diversity of life on our planet. \nDr. Jani Benoit\, Professor of Chemistry\, will moderate the Q&A. \nThis hour-long talk and moderated Q&A will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibition: To Scatter or Sow—Diaspora in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:To Scatter or Sow: Diaspora in Contemporary Art serves as a central event for Wheaton’s campus-wide initiative to consider Diasporas: Economies\, Boundaries\, and Kinship. The title of the show is taken from the Greek root of the word\, and evokes not only the dispersal inherent in diaspora but also the potential for rich growth. Framing the multi-faceted idea of diasporas through the work of eight contemporary artists\, the exhibition includes video\, photography\, painting\, ceramics and text-based work. The exhibition will be presented both virtually and on the Wheaton campus. \nThe exhibition includes work by the following artists: Alina Bliumis\, Chinatown Pretty: Andria Lo & Valerie Luu\, Isabella Cruz-Chong\, Patricia Encarnación\, Michael Gac Levin\, Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow\, and Crys Yin. \n \n  \nGallery Hours \n1:00–5:00 p.m.\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Friday and Saturday\n1:00–8:00 p.m.\, Thursday\nThe galleries are closed Sunday\, Monday\, and during college breaks. \nPlease note: due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the galleries are only open to the Wheaton campus community.
