Sessions available for all include Career Services’ signature Wheaton to the World programs including alumni panels\, financial planning\, and internship and job search strategies. Community-building and anti-racist engagement will be featured in the final hour session hosted by Diversity\, Equity and Access Leadership (DEAL)\, focused on policing in America and the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement. \nA host of other activities will also take place\, including musical performances through dorm windows\, apple cider donuts on the Dimple\, introductions to new honors and scholars programs\, invitations to student activities and student activism\, and much\, much more.

SUMMARY:FabAcademy Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Wheaton is offering a new course this semester called FabAcademy and will be holding an info session for students who would like to learn more. If you are interested in participating in FabAcademy this year or in the future\, we recommend you attending. Students must be on campus next semester to take this course. \nSign up here. \n  \n“At the Fab Academy\, you will learn how to envision\, prototype and document your ideas through many hours of hands-on experience with digital fabrication tools.” Under the leadership of global instructor Neil Gershenfeld\, Wheaton students will be exposed to  innovative communities and ideas at a global level over the course of six months. Gershenfeld\, MIT Professor and Director of the Center for Bits + Atoms\, originally taught “How to Make Almost Anything” as an MIT course which grew into FabAcademy in 2009. Students who successfully complete FabAcademy will graduate with an extensive digital portfolio detailing their progress and final project. They will also gain the knowledge needed to take an idea from prototype to product. Wheaton will be the first college in New England to offer FabAcademy to its students. For more information\, visit the website! \nIf you have any questions about this course\, please email Madison at dunaway_madison@wheatoncollege.edu

SUMMARY:Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
DESCRIPTION:Mark Johnson MD PhD\, the Maroun Semaan Chair in Neurosurgery\, and chair and professor of neurological surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School\, will speak at Wheaton College\, Monday November 9\, 2020 at 5pm\, via Zoom. According to a recent interview on the Voices of UMass Med podcast\, Dr. Johnson\, grew up in Memphis\, Tenn.\, and his early thoughts of becoming a race car driver gave way to medicine. “When I was a kid\, I dreamed of doing something really significant.” Now a world-renowned neurosurgeon\, Dr. Johnson said “I often say to people I’m a scientist in a neurosurgeon’s body\,” and he adds “There are very few things that we do that are routine\, mundane and inconsequential.” \nDr. Johnson has been a great supporter of Wheaton’s students in the past\, having spoken about medicine and his personal career path with students in the Pre-Health Society before. Join students in Wheaton’s Pre-Health Society and BIO 324 Neurobiology course to hear Dr. Johnson deliver a talk entitled “Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus”. There will be time for question-and-answer about Dr. Johnson’s science and career as well. \nZoom link to be posted when available.

SUMMARY:Exploring Student-Faculty Partnerships as Anti-Racist Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:The tragic COVID-19 pandemic revealed long-standing inequities in America that have been disguised by post-racial ideology; it shattered the perception of higher as the great equalizer\, and it exposed systemic injustices operating as the status quo. As we envision the times beyond the recent climaxes of these dire crises\, what is our responsibility within higher education for resisting intersecting forms of oppression? How do we understand and enact anti-racist pedagogy to create authentically inclusive educational spaces? Join Dr. Chanelle Wilson\, Bryn Mawr College\, and Mercedes Davis\, Haverford College ’20\, as they facilitate an interactive workshop about student-faculty partnerships and co-teaching as a form of anti-racist pedagogy. The workshop will include theoretical grounding and practical strategies for entering into and expanding classroom partnership\, along with the opportunity for interactive engagement with these concepts. \nSpeaker Biographies: \nDr. Chanelle Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Colleges Education Program\, and the Director of Africana Studies at Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Wilson has served as a public school practitioner\, teaching secondary education students\, in the United States and around the world. She enjoys facilitating knowledge in a way that encourages personal connections\, promotes critical thinking\, highlights contemporary relevance\, and necessitates justice. Her current scholarship focuses on race and anti-racism in education\, decolonization of schools and the mind\, students as teachers and learners\, culturally relevant pedagogy in international schooling contexts\, and multicultural education in K-12 settings. Dr. Wilson employs strategies of mindfulness and emotional support\, with `a steady underlying premise of love\, joy\, and hope. \nMercedes Davis holds a BA in Sociology and Education from Haverford College\, where she specialized in studies of race\, socioeconomic inequality\, and cultural processes.

SUMMARY:Making the Market: Joel Bonasera
DESCRIPTION:“After spending over a decade in science and technology education\, I’ve turned my focus on using digital fabrication to make things. What started as a bit of an obsession stoked by science fiction and science facts accidentally became a full time dream job. I blame Cory Doctorow (a little). Additive manufacturing and CAD are are my methods of choice. Often the goal is a 3D printed object. Sometimes\, 3D printing is a means to an end. Push for the Democratization of Fabrication\, Agency for Everyone\, and the recognition that The World is Malleable.” \nJoin us on March 24th from 6:30PM to 8ish. Meet Joel and learn about how to start a small scale business rooted in 3D printing. You’ll also learn about the tools you have access to on your own campus. Sign up here! \nWe will send zoom info closer to event date.

SUMMARY:Wheaton College Neuroscience Fair 2021
DESCRIPTION:Wheaton College faculty and students will join together with middle school students from the Boston Public Schools system to celebrate Brain Awareness Week (BAW). This virtual event offers an exciting opportunity for participating classrooms to Zoom in and rotate through an array of undergraduate student-facilitated neuroscience presentations. The event will begin with opening remarks about brain awareness week\, the brain\, and the benefits of brain and nervous system research before students engage with an interdisciplinary panel of faculty/researchers\, who will discuss their work\, careers in science\, and student questions. Students will then be divided into groups and led through a series of fun\, interactive activities and exhibitions. They will learn about neuroanatomy through the dissection of a sheep brain\, build model neurons\, and learn about tactile stimulation and the homunculus. Students will also explore the sensory systems that control the way we see and hear\, visualize neurotransmission\, and think of ways to boost brain health before concluding with meditation activities. After the workshop sessions\, students will participate in a NeuroBee Kahoot! competition to test their knowledge\, learn more about the brain\, and expand their interest in neuroscience. The event will conclude with awards recognizing the NeuroBee winners (middle school students only). \nRegistration is required for the zoom link. To register\, please email: maeng_lisa@wheatoncollege.edu.
