DESCRIPTION:Our annual award ceremony will occur on the evening of Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023 at 7 PM in Weber Theatre. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Loretta Ross. Loretta Ross is an award-winning\, nationally-recognized expert on racism and racial justice\, women’s rights\, and human rights. Her work emphasizes the intersectionality of social justice issues and how intersectionality can fuel transformation. Ross is a visiting associate professor at Smith College teaching courses on white supremacy\, race and culture in America\, human rights\, and calling in the calling out culture. She also is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellow\, Class of 2022\, for her work as an advocate of Reproductive Justice and Human Rights. \nAnother highlight of the Celebration is our Creativity Showcase\, where we share and celebrate student creative work that offers tangible reflection on King’s philosophies and principles of equity\, justice and/or peace. As civil war raged in the empire\, her husband betrayed the king\, her teenage son became a political hostage\, her unbaptized infant was taken from her arms\, and her husband forced her to remain alone in Uzès. Lonely and ailing\, she picked up a quill and began to write. DESCRIPTION:Please join President Michaele Whelan\, Provost Touba Ghadessi and Dean of Students Darnell Parker for the college’s annual celebration of academic accomplishment. \nProfessor Francisco Fernández de Alba\nDepartmental and College awards will be presented to students who have distinguished themselves as scholars and academic citizens of Wheaton College.  Senior Class President Caylynn Watson-Fields ’23 will present the Faculty Appreciation Award and Provost Touba Ghadessi will announce the recipient of this year’s endowed honorary chair\, Jane E. Ruby Chair in Humanities and Social Sciences. \nProfessor of Hispanic Studies Francisco Fernández de Alba will deliver the keynote address titled “On the Lasting Value of a Good Book”. \nThe lineup for the procession begins promptly at 4:45 p.m.  College Marshals Stephanie Daniels and Russell Williams will line up the faculty in front of Knapton Hall and students in front of the Chapel. (Inclement weather: Faculty will line up in the lower level of the Chapel and students will line up in Balfour-Hood). \nJoin us for a campus BBQ on the Dimple immediately following the ceremony.  The event is open to the public but seating is limited and on a first-come\, first-served basis.  The recording of the ceremony and the official program will be available online shortly after the event.
