DESCRIPTION:Our annual award ceremony will occur on the evening of Wednesday\, February 8\, 2023 at 7 PM in Weber Theatre. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Loretta Ross. Loretta Ross is an award-winning\, nationally-recognized expert on racism and racial justice\, women’s rights\, and human rights. Her work emphasizes the intersectionality of social justice issues and how intersectionality can fuel transformation. Ross is a visiting associate professor at Smith College teaching courses on white supremacy\, race and culture in America\, human rights\, and calling in the calling out culture. She also is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellow\, Class of 2022 \, for her work as an advocate of Reproductive Justice and Human Rights. \nAnother highlight of the Celebration is our Creativity Showcase\, where we share and celebrate student creative work that offers tangible reflection on King’s philosophies and principles of equity\, justice and/or peace. DESCRIPTION:Non-Judging • Patience • Beginner’s Mind • Trust • Non-Striving • Acceptance • Letting Go • Gratitude • Generosity \nZen • Egolessness • Connection \nKendra is a qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher-Level 1 from the Mindfulness Center-Brown University School of Public Health.  She has also received training to teach Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Life course through the Oxford Mindfulness  Center.  Kendra also is a Professional Life Coach with Certification in Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP) and a BA in Psychology\, Family Studies and Counseling. Through Mindfulness Life Coaching\, LLC she uses her skills to partner with participants in group settings and one-on-one to reach more awareness  in their lives. \nKana Hattori lives in Japan and is a Certified Instructor of the Urasenke Tea Ceremony\, headed by Sen Soshitsu XVI\, Zabosai\, a 16th generation descendant of “cha-sei” Sen no Rikyu. While at the Kyoto University of Arts\, she wrote her graduation thesis\, “Kimono Attire and Appearance: Between Tradition and Modernity”. She has also studied Chado\, Shamisen\, and Noh.

White Food: Issues of Race\, Voice\, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom. \nThe 2020 coronavirus pandemic has changed our systems of education forever. Teacher shortages and attacks on teaching accurate historical and contemporary realities of race continue to compound the ways that schooling has long been a site of crisis for Black and Brown youth. But what if the crisis is a catalyst? The first photograph came from an antique store in Dallas. The photograph was of two men in a loving embrace mixed within random photos of a Dallas neighborhood from the 1920s. [Their] collection of over 2800 vintage photos of romantic couples spanning the 100 years between the 1850s and 1950s is the basis for [their] book. \nLOVING: A Photographic History shines a new light on the most written about\, dramatized\, or filmed emotions — love. DESCRIPTION:To Scatter or Sow: Diaspora in Contemporary Art serves as a central event for Wheaton’s campus-wide initiative to consider Diasporas: Economies\, Boundaries\, and Kinship. The title of the show is taken from the Greek root of the word\, and evokes not only the dispersal inherent in diaspora but also the potential for rich growth. Framing the multi-faceted idea of diasporas through the work of eight contemporary artists\, the exhibition includes video\, photography\, painting\, ceramics and text-based work. The exhibition will be presented both virtually and on the Wheaton campus. \nThe exhibition includes work by the following artists: Alina Bliumis\, Chinatown Pretty: Andria Lo & Valerie Luu\, Isabella Cruz-Chong\, Patricia Encarnación\, Michael Gac Levin\, Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow\, and Crys Yin. \n \n  \nGallery Hours \n1:00–5:00 p.m.\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Friday and Saturday\n1:00–8:00 p.m.\, Thursday\nThe galleries are closed Sunday\, Monday\, and during college breaks. \nPlease note: due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the galleries are only open to the Wheaton campus community. All of our programing will be provided virtually as well.
