SUMMARY:MLK Legacy Celebration: Critical Hope in Context of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Keynote by Dr. Jamila Lyiscott\nAspiring way-maker\, community-engaged scholar\, and author of Black Appetite. White Food: Issues of Race\, Voice\, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom. \nThe 2020 coronavirus pandemic has changed our systems of education forever. Teacher shortages and attacks on teaching accurate historical and contemporary realities of race continue to compound the ways that schooling has long been a site of crisis for Black and Brown youth. But what if the crisis is a catalyst? One that compels us to come to terms with a broken education system that must be transformed in ways that are aligned with equity and justice for all. \nIn this talk\, Dr. J will share her Fugitive Action Framework as a lens for moving beyond “mythical hope”–empty promises of true change–and developing critical\, tangible hope to support the building of essential new futures. \nVirtual event via Zoom\, registration required. \nRegister on Zoom \nWe are having campus watch parties and if you contact the Marshall Center at marshallcenter@wheatoncollege.edu to let us know of your watch party\, we will prepare a watch party snack bag for your group.

SUMMARY:The Lived Experience of a Female Entrepreneur in Japan
DESCRIPTION:An event co-hosted by Social Impact & Innovation Club and Theater & Film students at large. \nIn response to a declining birthrate\, the Japanese government has created a range of progressive policies that make it easier for women in the workforce to have and care for children while continuing their careers. However\, the focus of the government’s help has been always female employees working in mid-to-large corporations\, not female small business owners or female entrepreneurs. \nKana Hattori is a cultural entrepreneur who\, after 5 years as an in-house translator and 11 years as a freelance guide\, established “Mindfulness Journeys Japan” in March 2020. Kana’s  business has always been mission-driven\, driven by her love and respect for Japanese culture. She’s never lost sight of her goals and passion despite market volatility and huge declines of inbound tourism after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and because of the COVID-19 in 2020 (and still ongoing!).  In this seminar\, Kana will frankly talk about her lived experience as a female social entrepreneur in Japan.

SUMMARY:Medical History (Part One)
DESCRIPTION:A live performance by artist Dominic Quagliozzi \nDominic Quagliozzi merges his lived experience as a person with chronic illness and disability into art. By repurposing and re-coding medical materials in art making\, he explores the emotional and psychological space in moments of vulnerability\, anxiety\, fragility\, and resilience. Medical History (Part One) is a live performance set in a loosely interpreted Operating Theater. It shares Quagliozzi’s questioning of time\, the believability of his body\, anxiety\, and the voyeuristic nature of the hospital environment. Through the use of special effects makeup\, the artist’s body will appear whole and untouched\, while under the surface years of medical intervention and health trauma is ruminating. This first and singular performance at Wheaton is part of a journey that has evolved\, devolved and revolved back again to some form of stability. Conceived as a continuation to his 2014 performance Medical History (Part Two)\, which confronted his physical deterioration and meditated on upcoming invasive surgical procedures\, Part One carries the radical embodiment of resilience and adaptation\, seeking to bridge the gaps between the two. \nThe performance will be followed by a QA\, led by RISD Museum curator Conor Moynihan\, whose exhibition Variance: Making\, Unmaking\, and Remaking Disability on view through October 9\, 2022 includes work by Quagliozzi. \nOrganized by the WIIIH\, and sponsored by the Evelyn Danzig Haas Visiting Artist Program.
