SUMMARY:Science Writing for the Public Good: Let’s Have Fun with Math & Get Serious About AI
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Norman W. Johnson Lecture will be delivered by award-winning science writer and mathematician Susan D’Agostino. This talk will range from the delightful fact that penguins use mathematics to huddle in Antarctica’s subzero temperatures to the dangers of unbridled technology optimism. \nD’Agostino is a Spencer Education Journalism Fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism\, where she is working on a book about AI in higher education. She the author of How To Free Your Inner Mathematician (Oxford University Press\, 2020)\, which received the Mathematical Association of America’s Euler Book Prize for an exceptionally well written book with a positive impact on the public’s view of math. She is the technology correspondent at Inside Higher Ed. Her work has been published in The Atlantic\, Washington Post\, Scientific American\, Wired\, Quanta\, BBC\, Nature\, National Public Radio\, Financial Times\, and other outlets. \nHer writing has been recognized with fellowships from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University\, National Association of Science Writers\, Council for the Advancement of Science Writing\, Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation\, and Mila–Quebec AI Institute. She earned a Ph.D. in math from Dartmouth College\, an MA in science writing from Johns Hopkins University\, and a BA in anthropology from Bard College.

SUMMARY:The World of Design—16th Annual Mary L. Heuser Lecture featuring Doug Scott
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the wide wide world of graphic design and its relationship to other design disciplines. \nDoug Scott’s design work has won awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts\, Society of Typographic Arts\, Boston Hatch Awards\, New York Art Directors Club\, Boston Art Directors Club\, Broadcast Designers Association and Bookbuilders of Boston. He has been a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts since 1974 and served on its national board of directors from 1989–1992. He currently runs a design practice doing book and identity design\, and is consulting Art Director of Davis Publications\, an art education publisher in Worcester\, Massachusetts. Scott teaches graphic design\, exhibition design\, typography and graphic design history at the RISD and teaches graphic design and design history at the Yale School of Art. He has also taught at UMASS/Dartmouth\, Northeastern\, RIC and Connecticut College.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ada McKenzie Thomas\, Asst. Professor of English\, for an upcoming Faculty Research Talk\, Abbey Lincoln’s Spiritual Roots. \nPresenters will begin by discussing their topic\, and each session will close with a question and answer segment. All presentations are virtual and free and the Zoom link will be sent the day before this discussion. \nDescription: In this talk\, I examine Abbey Lincoln’s rootedness in spirituality as evinced in her poetry and songwriting from the latter part of her career. Her albums\, Talking to the Sun (1983)\, Devil’s Got Your Tongue (1992)\, Wholly Earth (1999)\, as well as poems from her unpublished collection\, In a Circle\, Everything is Up\, reveal her lifelong identity as a fervent roots-seeker\, a spiritual sojourner in search of truth and understanding. \nA multifaceted artist whose career traversed the Civil Rights and Black Arts Movements\, and intersected with Black feminisms and Pan-Africanist discourses\, Lincoln’s concerns frequently echo those of other writers and artists of the various eras through which she lived. Lincoln’s thematic eclecticism is a hallmark of her songwriting\, poetry\, and prose\, however her work remains rooted in a deeply personal and spiritual exploration. This talk explores the motifs of this spiritual sojourn emerging from Lincoln’s latter works\, as based upon the archival research that I have conducted for my manuscript on Lincoln’s life in letters\, Aminata: Abbey Lincoln’s Song of Faith\, to be published by Rutgers University Press. \nRegister

We are pleased to announce that Jani Benoit\, Professor of Chemistry\, will deliver the keynote address\, “Sustainability: Diverse Wisdom for a Common Goal.” \nDepartmental and College awards will be presented to students who have distinguished themselves as scholars and academic citizens of Wheaton College. DESCRIPTION:Data Visualization in the News will be the topic of the 2024 Norman W. Johnson Lecture delivered by Amanda Cox. She will discuss how news organizations use data to communicate scale\, context and patterns to large audiences. \nAmanda Cox is the executive editor for data journalism at Bloomberg News. She spent most of her career at the New York Times\, where she made graphics for a decade and edited The Upshot for another six years. She has a masters degree in statistics from the University of Washington and a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College. Her Wikipedia page says that she is the Michael Phelps of infographics. She has no idea what this means.

DESCRIPTION:For many scholars and journalists\, cinema seems to be in its death throes\, especially in terms of theatrical viewing. Yet horror movies top the box office\, with studios like A24\, Blumhouse\, and Neon churning out a constant stream of terror amid excitement around so-called “elevated horror.” How can we explain this seeming contradiction? Please join us for a talk with Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece\, Associate Professor\, English and Film Studies\, who will take listeners on a brief tour of the history of weird and eco horror film and touch on some of its most salient characteristics in order to theorize what it means to watch horror in the theater versus streaming and why we want to watch it today. \n

This particular book is a series of prose poems remarking on her different nostalgic views on Seattle\, her hometown. And juxtaposing that to what nostalgia might mean to Berlin. Germany has a complicated history. And Berlin\, in particular\, where rebuilding has to account for its very recent history as a divided city.

Honors Convocation is an annual celebration to acknowledge excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits. \nDepartmental and College awards will be presented to students who have distinguished themselves as scholars and academic citizens of Wheaton College. Jema Espinosa\, Class of ’25 Chair\, will present the Faculty Appreciation Award and Provost Jonathan Millen will announce the recipient of this year’s endowed honorary professorships. \nThe lineup for the procession begins promptly at 4:45 p.m. College Marshals Stephanie Daniels and Russell Williams will line up the Faculty (in regalia) in front of Knapton Hall and Seniors (in robes) in front of the Chapel. (Inclement weather: Faculty will line up in the lower level of the Chapel and Seniors will line up in Balfour-Hood). A campus BBQ will be held on the Dimple immediately following the ceremony (rain location is Emerson Dining Hall). \nHonors Convocation is open to the public but seating is limited and on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:MAP Day Fall 2025
DESCRIPTION:This is a day for exploration\, reflection\, and planning. It is a celebration of learning in its broader sense. In place of regular classes\, participate in special activities designed to reflect on where you are in your educational journey and the steps you need to take to make it where you want to go. \nMAP Day happenings include workshops for students at every stage of their college career and advising sessions for each academic program area\, as well as sessions on topics such as study abroad\, life and career planning\, honors and scholars programs\, and financial planning. There will be a major fair and a graduate school fair\, as well as other career-related programming. (The full schedule of activities will be available soon.) \nThe day’s events also include an academic session in which faculty engage in an interdisciplinary conversation to discuss the topic of “Abundance and reciprocity” from their disciplinary perspectives. The theme was inspired by the first-year students’ common reading selection\, The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World\, by Robin Wall Kimmerer. \nAnswering your reflective MAP Questions is required for graduation and you can complete them during MAP Day. Please talk with your advisor if you have questions.
