Heidi-Carolyn Bedard '10 returned to Italy in Summer 2013 for her second year of teaching English to school-aged children in summer camps affiliated with the Associazione Culturale Linguistica Educational (ACLE). The experience has expanded her ability to design creative lesson plans in order to bridge the language barrier and reach children at various developmental stages. Prior to working for ACLE, Heidi worked for the SouthCoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning, Education, and Service (SMILES) for three years. The mission of SMILES is to help at-risk children realize their personal and educational potential through one-to-one mentoring. Most recently, she served as the program director and was responsible for curriculum development, program organization, and supervision of staff and mentors. Heidi resigned from her position with SMILES in August 2013 to follow her dream of teaching Italy. Her advice to Wheaton students is that "If you're doing something you love, it never feels like work."
