Upcoming viewing highlights
TRANSIT OF MERCURY ON MONDAY MAY 09
Weather permitting, we will be viewing the upcoming transit of Mercury on Monday May 9th using the telescopes in our observatory. We invite Wheaton students (take a break from your exams!) as well as the members of the general public to join us and enjoy this rare astronomical event. The Wheaton College Observatory is on the roof of the Mars Science Center, accessible via stairs and elevators. We will use our 11" Celestron CPC1100 telescopes equipped with solar filters, to observe the entire event, starting at 7:12am EDT and ending at 2.42pm EDT. Click here for a nice article about this upcoming transit.
Given this is New England, please check this webpage before you leave home for any last minute weather related cancellation.
Upcoming Public Viewing Open Nights in the Observatory:
All Observatory Open Nights are Friday evenings.
Start times vary depending on Moon and planet rise and set times.
Fall 2016 Schedule:
The Wheaton College Observatory will resume our Friday Open Observatory Nights program in September.
Schedule will be posted then.
While public open nights will be closed during the summer, we are offering a course on "Lunar Exploration" for high-school students during July 2016 which will use the observatory. Please click here for more info on this course.
Directions for the open nights
We will meet first in the old science center auditorium (on Howard St., just off Taunton Rd) for a slide show before proceeding to the new observatory. There is parking on the right just past the entrance. Check back to this page for an updated weekly schedule. The Friday Observatory Open Night event is free of charge.
The Observatory welcomes pre-scheduled small groups to visit our facilities on public viewing nights. We ask that all groups larger than 10 arrange their visits to the observatory so that we can manage the number of visitors to our program. Families and smaller groups are welcome at all times and do not need to make prior arrangements.
