“Black Identities Revisited: New and Old African Americans in Middle Class New York”

Orly Clerge is a Postdoctoral Associate for the Urban Ethnography Workshop in the Department of Sociology at Yale University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Demography at Brown University in 2013. She is a graduate of Wheaton College, where she received her bachelors degree in Sociology.

Orly’s research interests are in urban sociology, race and ethnicity and immigration/migration. Her dissertation, titled “Black Identities Revisited: New and Old African Americans in Middle Class New York” examines the social and cultural integration of black immigrants into the African American middle class. Orly’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
