Honors Convocation 2024

Please join President Whelan, Interim Provost Karen McCormack, and Dean of Students Darnell Parker at Honors Convocation on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in Cole Memorial Chapel.

Honors Convocation is an annual celebration to acknowledge excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits. We are pleased to announce that Jani Benoit, Professor of Chemistry, will deliver the keynote address, “Sustainability: Diverse Wisdom for a Common Goal.”

Departmental and College awards will be presented to students who have distinguished themselves as scholars and academic citizens of Wheaton College. Rachel Hickey, Class of ’24 Chair, will present the Faculty Appreciation Award and Interim Provost Karen McCormack will announce the recipient of this year’s endowed honorary chairs, the Frances A. Shirley Endowed Professorship and the Hannah Goldberg Chair in Teaching Innovation.

The lineup for the procession begins promptly at 4:45 p.m. College Marshals Stephanie Daniels and Russell Williams will line up the Faculty (in regalia) in front of Knapton Hall and Seniors (in robes) in front of the Chapel. (Inclement weather: Faculty will line up in the lower level of the Chapel and Seniors will line up in Balfour-Hood).

A campus BBQ will be held on the Dimple immediately following the ceremony (Rain location is Emerson Dining Hall). The event is open to the public but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. The recording of the ceremony and the official program will be available online shortly after the event.

Honors Convocation 2023

The Honors Convocation ceremony took place on Thursday, May 4, 2023, in the Cole Memorial Chapel.  President Whelan, Provost Touba Ghadessi, and Dean of Students Darnell Parker presented the departmental and college awards to students who have distinguished themselves as scholars and academic citizens of Wheaton College. Francisco Fernández de Alba, Professor of Hispanic Studies, delivered the keynote address, “On the Lasting Value of a Good Book.” Calynn Watson-Fields, Class of ’23 Chair, presented the Senior Class Faculty Appreciation Award to Jessie Knowlton, Assistant Professor of Biology. In addition, the recipient of this year’s endowed honorary chair, Jane E. Ruby Chair in Humanities and Social Sciences is Jade Werner, Associate Professor of English.
