Studio Facilities

State-of-the-art facilities provide space and equipment for you as students to explore an array of media:

  • Design and computer graphic studios feature up-to-date hardware including 27″ iMacs and iPads pros, Adobe Creative Suite and other software, scanning and printing equipment.
  • Expanded drawing and painting studios capture optimal natural light for student artists as they develop their creativity and skill in carefully appointed work areas.
  • Studio courses in film production and animation are supported by an edit suite with 16mm film bench editing stations and new Final Cut DV editing set-ups as well as a film classroom and screening room for demos, and film and video viewing.
  • A dedicated darkroom and digital photography studio with computers and Epson large-format photo printers.
  • A large printmaking studio promotes the exploration of non-toxic techniques in intaglio, lithography, relief, book arts, and features three etching presses, a Vandercook letterpress, and a rare wooden bed lithography press once owned by Abstract Expressionist painter and printmaker Robert Motherwell.
  • The sculpture studio, with 14-foot ceilings and exceptional light, is large and well-equipped, and allows students to use diverse media and techniques, including woodworking, metalworking and welding, waxwork, ceramics, and modeling and casting. The studio includes access to an outdoor sculpture work yard for large-scale projects.
  • The centralized Davis Art Court connecting student and faculty studios serves as a exhibition space to showcase student work; this high-traffic concourse also attracts campus community members interested in viewing the art.
  • Senior Visual Art majors have dedicated studio spaces.
  • Students also have access to digital fabrication equipment in Wheaton’s Innovation Spaces including MakerBot and FormLabs 3D printers, a 120 Watt Epilogue laser cutter/engraver, a 5-axis ShopBot CNC milling machine, a 30” AVL programmable jacquard loom, and HTC Vive augmented reality equipment.
