The Wallace Library’s various use policies exist to optimize a library environment conducive to learning and research for Wheaton’s students, faculty, and staff. We welcome visitors to use the collections and facilities as described in these policies.

In accordance with the Code of Ethics of the ALA, Wallace Library staff must support each patron’s right to privacy with respect information sought or received and any information pertaining to borrowing and/or usage history. Additionally, the Library adheres to the ALA’s Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records and Confidentiality Personally Identifiable Information about Library Users. Consistent with these policies, the Wallace Library will keep all library materials that are used, borrowed or requested confidential within the library.

Food and Drink Policy

To provide a comfortable, inviting study atmosphere for all library users, the Library staff and college custodians ask that you respect those around you and protect library property.

  • Drinks must be in spill-proof containers
  • Clean up after yourself
  • Report spills immediately to library staff

Cell Phone Policy

Patrons are asked to turn off cell phone ringers when entering the Wallace Library. Patrons placing or receiving a call are asked to do so in one of the following areas:

  • near the elevators on each level
  • outside the library entrance

Computer Use

All library users are expected to comply with the college’s Acceptable Use Policies. Faculty/staff and student policies are slightly different.

No one unauthorized to do so may install software on any of the public computers.

All library users are expected to be considerate of others and adhere to the policies of Wheaton College and the Wallace Library.

Visitors who engage in noisy or disruptive behavior, or use any library facilities for recreational or personal business endeavors will be asked to leave.

Visitors Policy

During the 2020-2021 academic year and following campus guidelines, visitors are not allowed in Wallace Library. 

Visitors are welcome to use the facilities and resources of the Wallace Library Monday – Thursday 8 AM-8 PM, Friday 8 AM-3 PM, Saturday 12-5 PM (see note) and Sunday 12- 7 PM.  NB: The library is not open to visitors on Saturdays, except for those presenting a HELIN or Wheaton affiliate membership card. During breaks and summer the library is open to visitors during regular posted hours. During final exam periods the library is closed to all visitors with the exception of HELIN consortium members. The Marion B. Gebbie Archives & Special Collections, located in the Library, is open to visitors Monday-Friday, 10 AM-4 PM.

Visitors must register at the Information Desk upon arrival and show a valid ID to receive a visitor’s pass for that day. Guests under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.

Because the Wallace Library’s primary purpose is to support the curricular, teaching, research, and administrative needs of the Wheaton College community, precedence will be given to Wheaton College students, faculty, and staff in the use of all library facilities and resources at all times.

Visitors’ Access to Computing and Information Resources

All computers, printers, scanners and photocopiers in the library are for academic, instructional, and research purposes. After receiving a username and password at the Information Desk, visitors are permitted to use one of the four Visitor Stations to access the Internet and library resources. Because Wheaton students, faculty, and staff have priority access, visitors may be asked to forfeit use if a Wheaton user needs access.

All library users are expected to comply with college policy for the Acceptable Use of Campus Network and Computing Systems.

Staff availability and priorities will limit assistance offered to visitors.

Wireless service is available for computers only throughout the building: the required password may be obtained at the Information Desk. Printing is not available through your laptop, only at the designated Visitor Stations.

Study Carrel Policy

Due to the building occupancy limits related to COVID-19, study carrels will not be available for checkout during the 2020-2021 academic year. Carrels are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Library will assign reserved study carrels, upon request, to Honors Thesis Students.

The following regulations govern the use of library carrels:

  • Library materials must be checked out at the Information Desk. Books that will be left in the carrel need to have a green carrel flag in each book. This flag alerts staff that the book is checked out and will prevent it from being returned to the stacks. Carrel flags are available at the Information Desk. Access Services staff members reserve the right to inspect the carrel at any time during the semester. Materials not checked out will be removed and returned to circulation. Books are subject to recall and must be returned immediately.
  • Periodicals, reference books, reserve materials and Interlibrary Loan books may not be kept in the carrel.
  • The Library will not be responsible for damage, theft, or loss to personal property left in the carrel. You will be responsible for the replacement costs of missing Library materials checked out to you.
  • Adjacent carrels are in use – please be courteous.
  • Carrel reservations are for the academic year, September-May. Please return all books to the Access Services Department and remove other materials from the carrel by the May due date.
  • Carrel assignee will abide by the library Food and Drink Policy. No food is allowed in the carrel overnight.
  • Misuse of the carrel may result in the loss of carrel privileges.

The student assigned to the carrel has first rights to its use. It is assumed that others will use the carrel when it is not in use. The carrel assignee has the right to ask other users to move when the carrel is needed.

Private Tutors Policy

During the 2020-2021 academic year and following campus guidelines, private tutors are not allowed in Wallace Library. 

Tutors who provide their services to Wheaton students on a privately contracted basis are visitors who must comply with the following  policies and procedures:

  • Private tutors must be accompanied by their student tutee and register at the Information Desk upon arrival. Be prepared to show a valid ID to receive a visitor’s pass.
  • The Library has designated one space on the Periodical’s Level near the stairwell of the marble staircase as our library tutoring space. It is appropriately placed to honor the need for quiet for all students and to respect the privacy of the tutee. The area is for tutors on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Other space may be assigned at the discretion of Library staff.
  • The tutoring space is available until 8pm Sunday – Thursday and until 3pm on Friday during the academic year, including exam period, and until the library closes during the non-academic year.
  • Private tutors must observe appropriate standards of conduct while using the Library.

We appreciate your cooperation in complying with these policies and procedures.

Non-Wheaton affiliated tutors must work with Conference & Events services to establish a contract to use Wheaton facilities.
